996 or 997 - what to do?
He's looking at 2003 996, which would be used. I doubt if there are any 03 996 that are new @ dealers. 04 are being liquidated already.
To me, 997 and 996 interior improvement is nice but not worth the difference in price. If the 997 engine is a new design that addresses RMS, then it's worth the extra $20k for a new car. However, that's not the case. So, it all depends on how much you care about a new car, getting the latest look/feel, and a longer warranty. I'd also look into 2002 if you are thinking of 2003. They are essentially the same but the 1 yr depreciation is a lot of $$$.

First of all, thank god it's friday.
The gentleman was(I thought) refering to a remaining '04-05 C4S currently on a lot. My local dealer has 1 cpe, 1 cab, I'm sure there are others. The heaviest and slowest is indeed the C4S CAB MY'04, not the coupe. The C4S cpe(MY'03) runs the ring faster than any C2 996, check the times yourself. The wt differential is, I believe 281#, not that much. I would gladly put my 030, awd, turbo braked C4S up against the stock 997 suspension any day. I have driven two 997's (plain and S), granted not on the track. On my last trip to Watkins Glen, I consistantly lapped a 997c2 in my run group with two different drivers.
DJ,The engine in the plain 997(3.6) is exactly the same as the 996 3.6. In fact the 3.8 is also based on the same main block, thus the RMS problems are still here.
Why does everyone on this board like to bash C4Ss', can't we all just live together?
Have a nice weekend guys, I'm going to go and drive my C4S in some heavy-*** traffic!

You were bashing the 997! com'on surge
the 997 is not exactly the same, it's intake runners have been enlarged slightly , and the rev limiter has been raised to 7300 RPM
thus the 5 Hp gain. Porsche says the RMS issue has been resolved (different supplier and changed installation procedure)
Red calipers and an extra 281 lbs. do not make your car faster than a 997!

We'll see, so far I've never been passed by a 997 at a DE, that trend, I'm sure, will continue.
I still have my doubts about the RMS though. I hope you're right.
Bashing 997's, why not, it's friday and everybody bashes C4S all week long.
I'll probably end up with an 997 someday myself(TT,not plain).
Have a nice weekend everybody, it's all in fun.

Guys, we are all in the same family. C2 C4s, 997, 997S You can't go wrong with any of them. It is matter of personal preference. My advice is look around for the models you are intertested and test drive them long enough to get a feel for the nuances of each model. Each model will bring something different to the table. Then go with what feels right to you. Besides, you can always mod the crap out of it.

Reading your post leads me to believe you are most interested in the look and feel of the two versions. Pick the 911 that looks and feels the best to you. To base a decision on what some of the "professional racer" types on this board think is ridiculous unless you plan to track the car extensively, in which case you may want to consider buying a used Turbo or a GT3 and mod it.
Personally, I prefer the looks and handling of the 2003 C4S to the 997 so that's what I drive.

I love my NA 996 but, my next car will be a 996 Turbo. A good friend has one with the x50 package and the car is unreal. For the same mid-$80's as a 997 or a leftover C4S, you can get a three year old turbo with low milage (20K's) . Then you have the sure- footedness of the C4 and power to spare. A true supercar. Go drive a Turbo!
PS - Post on the turbo thread if your looking to try one out.

Thanks guys for all the feedback....obviously this will be a hard choice. I am a bit concerned with resale value of an 02/03 C4S in a couple of years. I like the look of the C4S, but hate hearing that it is the slowest of the 911's. Performance is important too
It's only "slow" compared to a gt3/997s and the like on the ring 8:12 v 7:7ish, hardly noticeable to the seat of your pants. If you really want the fastest 911, get a GT2 and be done with it. Before you get overly concerned about the C4Ss' "slowness" drive one on a track sometime and hold on tight. Good luck
