Are basic bolt on mods worth it?

Now that I have a 2005 997 S I started thinking about mods. In the past on my other cars Corvette and Mustang I put in air intakes and exhausts. The result was just a louder car and not much of a performance gain other then what you think you can feel. Can anyone comment on the exhaust and intake gains on the 997? Are the worth it?

Do some research on this board and you will find your answers. IMO opinion yes.

Best bang for the buck. Headers, 200 cell cats, and software.

An intake alone or muffler wont make any power. If you do the whole thing like dndodd said ( headers, high flow cats, intake, ecu) then you will start to notice some improvement. Personally, i like modding because it adds to the uniqueness of the car

If I were doing it all over again, I would install the headers, 200 cell cats, and a LWFW. The rest of the mod money I would put into the suspension. I think that considering you are coming from a front engine/rear drive would to a rear/rear, spend some time learning to drive your car, it is quite different then the any other car you have driven.

I've done exhaust, headers, intake and software. The most impactful in terms of performance was the software. While the headers, intake and exhaust help the car breathe better(and sound better)..the software maximizes these mods. I went with EVOMSit software and am very pleased.

Yes....very noticeable gains by changing to 200 cell sport cats, X51 headers, and Softronics software. I also dropped in a BMC air filter, and kept my stock mufflers.

The car drives and sounds much better now....but still looks stock.

I just installed the B&M short shifter yesterday and its great as well....

I am in the same boat. I have searched the forum but real dyno comparison before and after mod seem to be hard to find. www.planet-9.com has some but... Given that I have put on AWE headers (bought used) and would like some data before proceeding on the next two modes I am thinking about: AWE CATs and softronic flash.

EVOMSit.com has some dyno information. GIAC also has some dyno stats. Software is the way to go. What ever software you buy, you'll want to know what mods you plan to do. Most software is tweaked based on your set-up and octane.

Not that the vendors would be less than honest, I was looking for results from users. I have seen enough inflated claims on how an change intake hose or plenum will make significant HP gains that I really do not believe any vendor

Ya...I spent a ton of time looking for data. I decided that I was over thinking it. I went with the mods listed. I have no dyno results but know there is a difference with a smoother pull through the entire power band. I have no regrets. If you search through the forum and look at EVOMSit threads, Softtronic threads...you'll see forum members are very pleased. Not a lot of posted data.....just lots of folks pleased with the results.

This thread has a lot of dyno charts with different items added.

No dyno results but when I changed out to a complete AWE exhaust system (headers, cats, mufflers), there was a noticable increase in power (butt dyno). Not sure if it's the claimed 35+h.p. but a definite bump in power. Of course the sound is incredible.

Have to be careful of butt dyno results - the mind often gets confused and believes you are accelerating and going faster due to the weight reduction from your lighter wallet - it's a quirky thing...

Real dyno or better yet lower lap times are what are really needed IMHO
