What is this sludge on my oil cap?

Adding some oil tonight, this is what the inside of the oil cap looked like. There's some sludge-looking gunk in the cap and at the top end of the filler tube. Some of it looks like mustard color mixed with dark brown- the best comparison I can make is that it looks like the top of a Creme Brulee. I use only Mobile1 0W-40, and my last oil/ filter change was 5k miles ago.

I am paranoid because I am starting the DIY Supercharger installation on Saturday, and want to identify any issues before then. My dealer gave me a clean bill of health last week, so this is a surprise.

Is this normal, or OK?

It's moisture. Usually from short trippin.
Change your oil a little more frequently, and take the long way home much more often.

It is an emulsion of oil and water. It is more likely to occur in winter with the oil and water mix condensing at the top of the tube but be sure to run the car at leat 20 minutes to get the moisture out of the oil before shutting down. Otherwise, as previously stated, change the oil a bit more often.

As paet of your SC mod, get rid of the Mobil 0W40 and replace it with a good 15W50 such as Mobil 1. It may also eliminate your need to add oil between changes. You can use any extra 0W40 you may have for cleaning parts and lubricating hinges.

Not sure I would go as far as 15W50, but I never run 0W-40 anymore. 5W-40 in the winter time and 10W-40 in the warner months.

In old old times excessive foam like this was a sign of your coolant going into oil, but in your case most likely it is just from age of the car. get cap cleaned, then in 4-5 months look at it again.

I have the same thing going on in my 06 c2. I would tend to agree that it's condensation. I'm going to run something thicker first oil change.

Thank you sir, that is the plan- a little bird recommended that to me for the SC. My local Wal-Mart sells 1 gallon jugs of Mobil1 15w-50 for $22, which is a great price.

What do you hear about Royal Purple?

What's the deal with so many recommendations on oil? Porsche says 0w40 and some others use 5w or 10w or 15w >... ? I personally use 5w40 Lubro Moly because that's what the shop puts in where I have it changed.

My wifes Beetle used to look exactly like that, and she drove 2-3 miles one way to work, short drives for sure.
