DIY: Creating 'Colored Center Cap' from Polished 997 Turbo Wheels
DIY: Creating 'Colored Center Cap' from Polished 997 Turbo Wheels
I have the 997 Turbo Wheels with the standard gray/black polished center caps. I was thinking about replacing the Hood Crest with the silver version, but the more I think about it, the more I'd prefer to have the wheel center caps in the colored version. Has anyone painted their standard caps to add the gold/silver? Any tips (prep, paint type, brush/applicator)?
I may still swap hood crests, but would still want to add the red to my center caps as well.

If I could find some (at a reasonable price), I'd consider it. Just haven't found any Colored Center Caps that match the polished cap of the Turbo wheel.
I've been looking for a while with no luck. Figured it would be much easier to do it myself, and a fun little project that I can't screw up (too much).

I have silver caps as well and thought about painting them, but in the end I bought a new set primarily due to the fear of a poor DIY job and paint chipping/smearing etc
There is a market for silver caps out there so your net spend might not be very much

I would encourage you to paint them! Least expensive mod I have done. And it is really satisfying when finished.
I painted my old black/silver center caps (from my '89 C-4, no less) and they fit perfectly in my 997 wheels.
I brought a colored cap to a good hobby shop and bought the matching paint in the small bottles along with an artist brush.
Clean the caps completely (I used acetone).
I spent a morning (watch the caffiene if it makes your hands shake!) at the kitchen table with good light and reading glasses (I have verrrry old eyes), letting each color dry before adding the next. If at any time you goof, clean with acetone and start again.
I finished by letting the caps dry for 48 hours, then spraying 3 clear-coats over the caps, letting each coat dry between spraying.
They came out beatifully, and have lasted for 2 years thus far. I use a Rejex coating on the wheels (2 coats at every swap out for the snows) and they have remained in great shape.
Have fun!
