BTW, check the laser detector/shifter thread...I just posted some pics...and I verified shifters work tonight also with laser tester.
My car was CPO'd by the dealer before I bought it. You're right, CPO can only be done by a dealer when a car is sold by them. You will need to purchase an extended warranty from the dealer, since CPO won't work for you.

Size is infamous around these parts
piece of mind

just did an extended warranty for my '07 750li. didn't have one on my '01 740 and it costs $$$$ (over $20K) in repairs (not brakes, oil changes, etc.) in 6 years (about 100K total miles) that would have been covered. Its not the parts, mainly the labor can kill you. My '06 C4S is expiring in May - gotta look into extended warranty for piece of mind even though I drive it less than 6K year and take great care of it. Its usually not the base engine, but all of the electronics/steering/sensors/other systems that usually have faults and cost $$$$ to repair.

So, here's another (unpopular) view: No extended warranty. I've always opted out for warranties on cars, appliances, home theater systems, etc. It sounds crazy to many folks in here, but...

I've owned 3 new porsches over ~ 27 years, plus one used one. I believe my warranties were good for 2,3, and 4 years. So I've had ~16 years without the extended warranty coverage. (My current car is approaching 3 yrs old) If I had purchased extended coverage on all these cars over 16 years, what is that..something between $32K-$64K? I'd rather have my money work for me, than for Porsche-VW.

I have had headaches: steering shaft issues, coolant leaks, smoking electronics, starters fall out of my car, ghost breaking, selective seat memory, windows that only go in one direction (down), cracked cat converts, windscreen seperation, and multiple door handles fall off....but using independent mechanics, the bills were nowhere near what I would have paid in extended warranties...plus some of the items wouldn't even have been covered, as usual wear-n-tear. Porsche views extended warrantie$ as pure profit...otherwise, the company wouldn't offer it. (Most people never need to submit tickets for big claims.)

Maybe I'm lucky. Fortunately, I haven't had an engine failure or replacement. All my P cars were driven as daily drivers (no garage queens, here.)

If you go the non-warranty route, just be prepared that there is the outside chance that you will have to pay out the nose. When I've had multiple issues in the same year, I've tended to sell the car. It's time for a new one.

This makes a lot of sense to me. When my Porsche warranty was running out, I considered getting an extended warranty. But the math just seems odd. Overall, you're betting against the house that covered repairs on the car will overshadow the fee for the warranty. The house is betting that they won't. On average, you are a guaranteed loser. However, a finer point that makes the extended warranty more appealing for some is that the fee provides a (likely) predictable cost, while no warranty enables costs of any scale to be suffered by the owner. In some financial situations, that's a bet that an owner simply can't afford and in these cases, an extended warranty makes a lot of sense. But it's the only example that I can think of in which purchasing the warranty makes sense.

Can't and wouldn't argue with RyanJ and Verde....in my case I spent $2600 + tax for 5 years or 60,000 miles total odometer; payment is partially refundable if I sell the car or transferable to a new owner. Not trying to impress anyone but I drive several cars (from pretty good to a beater) so 6-8000 miles per year on the Porsche is normal and if I buy a new one this one will probably stay in the family - this was my reasoning. (This is the first extended warranty I've ever bought on anything.)

FWIW - I know two GM dealership owners pretty well and both insist that extended warranties on their used cars are 'usually' a great idea because of the current cost to repair/replace electronics or heated seats or AC, etc., and I know the cost (Wynn at both dealerships) is substantially less than on a P-car.
