Good thing that happened at 40 MPH and not 100+ or that could be catastrophic.

What brand wheels were those? I want to put them on my "do not buy" list!

This is EXACTLY why I will not run a cast wheel on the track. Forged only for track use.

Not really. Given it shattered to pieces, I would find it hard to discover the reason. Perhaps the other wheels might shed some light.
Weird is that on the website I did not had the impression of a low quality product. That serves to show that we need to stick together in forums like this to find out what to do with our precious toys....
I'll update if something new comes. It would be interesting to hear from other people that own the same wheel brand ...

Those wheels look a LOT like these... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/19-Po...Q5fAccessories

I've seen more and more of these cheap wheels come through my shop lately and consider them a plague. I can't stress enough how much I recommend AGAINST putting a wheel on a car as capable as a Porsche that you really know absolutely nothing about. This isn't the first time I've seen this type of wheel fail and it seems silly when you consider what could have happened. Buy a quality used wheel if $$ is the issue, but never skimp on safety. Brakes, Tires and quality wheels should come well before adding more power. It's even more crucial if he's spending time on the track. They are cheap for a reason.

+1 big time

It's a cheap thing that will become expensive or even cost your life.
They do look a lot like that indeed. Amazes me how a stealership can sell a car with those wheels.

Nice find, and great advice Jeremy.

John, did the dealer put these wheels on, or did the previous owner put them on and trade the car into the dealer? I am sure that they will just say that is what we received from the previous owner. I think dealers should watch the ebay, craigslist, forum classifieds and pick up a set of used OEM wheels when cars come in and don't have OEM wheels.

it was the second, which in my opinion is still bad. The stealership either ignored the type and quality of those wheels or didn't even knew about it. Both options are bad enough given what they charge.
Now, if a car come with oem replicas, how can one tell with they did their job? We need to inspect wheels as well for forgeries? It's not always easy, especially if one is not a car aficcionado like most of us.

I believe the manufacturer is KMC...I couldn't find any discussions of quality problems with their wheels except for a recall they did on a Kawasaki front wheel for the exact same thing....as previously discussed they are cast wheels and probably not suited to a heavy car that can generate some cornering/braking force...I would also question whether those black centers are painted or powdercoated...if they were powdercoated with improper temp that could be metal fatigue and the other wheels could be similarly affected

John, I agree with you 100%, a condition to CPO should include all OEM parts. The dealer obviously didn't care, or didn't know that these wheels are cheap. How many times do you see a dealer getting info wrong on a car that they should know. I saw a GT3 ad from a dealer that listed it as an Automatic...WTF can't you tell by looking in the car, let alone knowing that they don't have a automatic transmission available for the car.

I still think your friend should take it to the dealer, get them to deal with the repairs and set him up with a set of OEM wheels as a minimum.

I think those wheels are from zero wheels, model zero 1. Not 100% on that given similarities among other crappy wheels

that's what I told him, but I don't think he's going to do it, he avoids confrontations as much as he can. Me in the other hand, kinda like it.

The stealership here didn't even knew the difference between 08 and dfi engines regarding oil measurement procedures. I believe that would be a good and fun thread;" what was the most stupid thing a stealership ever told you"
