Help with DME Scan results - potential 997 owner!

Hello All,

I previously seen some thoughful replies from forum members regarding DME scan analysis. I was hoping I can get the same type of help from you guys for the DME scan I just got for a potential purchase.

The car is a 2005 997s with 51,000 miles on the clock. The DME results are as follows:

1) Number of ignitions, range 1: 8890, 1518.5h
2) Number of ignitions, range 2: 1535, 1389.6h
3) Number of ignitions, range 3: 497, 1363.6h
4) Number of ignitions, range 4: 389, 423.5h
5) Number of ignitions, range 5: 341, 254.5h
6) Number of ignitions, range 6: 124, 254.5h

Operating hours counter: 1522.600

I'm not sure what the second set of number for each range represent. Is it the hour in which the over rev happened? For example, does the range 6 over rev mean that it happened at the 254.5th operating hour out of 1522.600 total hours?

Also, should I be very concerned about the range 5 and 6 over rev? If the 254.5h means the 254.5th operating hour, it seems to be from when the car was relatively new. The car now has 51,000 miles and seems to run just fine. Is it safe to say the engine made through the abuse and is fine? Not sure if I should be worried about the future health of the engine...

Someone please chime in!

That is the worst DME I've ever seen. Sorry, but you need to walk away from this one.

You are reading the report correct.

Anything over 4 will void warranty and a 3 is grey area. If I recall correct, that 6 means that it was revved over 10,000 RPM. Valve float occurs on a stock engine around 8500 RPM (again, if I remember correct).

Unless there is a new engine in that baby run for the hills.

Touching that car even with a 10 foot pole is dangerous

Run, run like the wind.

Are you sure you copied the information correct to you post because if you did, WOW.

Is that car from a dealer or PP? Did the Porsche tech/service people say anything to you when they gave you the DME? Did you get a PPI done as well and if so, what did that show.

The car is through private party. I was shocked when I saw the dme results as well. The price is really good so I'm kinda debating the pro and cons. Dealer who performed the dme said range 5 and 6 is not normal. But they said if anothing happened after 50k miles it might be okay. Not sure what to do....

After all, it happened early and 50 k miles later car runs fine. But I definately don't want this to bite me in the butt in the future.

If you are actually debating if this is an issue then I don't know what to say. I would pass at first viewing of the report. Period. There is nothing to think about. Someone simply beat the **** out of it and just because its 50K+ miles means nothing.

But take your time and think about it.

I would strongly suggest that you read up on past posts about what the ranges and over revs mean. That will help you make an educated decision because asking if this one is OK shows that you are lacking some VERY key information. No offense meant-I think that everyone here wants to save you money and heart/headaches down the road.

The more you know the better off you will be in the end. Good luck.

Even though this car made it to 50,000 miles, I simply wouldn't risk it. There are too many great cars available to settle for such a brutal DME.

Good luck with your decision!

Don't spend your hard earned money on a car like that. A little more patience, and $$ and you can have something that has been taken care of.
