irysfan is infamous around these parts
White smoke could be anti-freeze or water in cylinder, Blue smoke is engine oil

I've heard that is common after a run on the track. A start after a hard track run can produce a lot of smoke as well. It is apparently oil blow by related.
I've also heard that Boxsters can have a tendency to do this all the time!

Any service advisor worth their salt would be happy to take your car in and check out anything you'd like looked at. Even if they did their due diligance and called you with a solution (wether covered under warranty or not).

I'm always upset when dealers talk about a customer building loyalty with them allowing them to make goodwill gestures. It's the dealers responsibility to earn your loyalty. 1.5 units of labour for an oil change is NOT how to do this!

white smoke at startup occurs on flat motor designs, its normal. the smell however is not and if its smoking each time you start it its not normal. also if smoking on one side only its a concern.

your SA sounds awful, find another. Make the drive to Mckenna if possible, Huy is great to deal with and knows his way around the car.

Pers,

I know the feeling, I think its because the service advisors have to deal with people modifying their cars way more frequently than BMW or Mercedes cars and also I think Pcar drivers are so in love with their car they freak out over anything and everything they can, me included.

I second the notion of the white smoke not being a big deal, don't worry about it, its quiet common and the gt3 guys have it worse than us.

On another note, has your water pump held up? I've replaced this part after only a couple thousand miles and am really reluctant to mod anything else until I am certain its not going to break again :/. FYI, Newport is not very mod friendly so I may try BH if I get headers...

My 2007 just put out some white/grey smoke out of the right exhaust when starting up from cold. I tried to repeat the symptom, but could not. The oil was changed 500 miles ago and the level guage reads in the middle. I'm taking it to the dealer Friday so I'll ask them.

I believe this is fairly normal with a flat-6. I believe what you are seeing is condensation upon a cold-start. That said, having your mechanic check into it is not a bad idea, just to be sure.

My 2002 C2 used to do a thick white cloud of smoke when started on some mornings, it was a very dense smoke that had about the same density as air - i.e. it did not dissipate very quickly, the cloud just stayed there. I never tought about getting out to take a "whiff" and it definitively wasn't blue - more white or gray.

It was really more common on cold humid mornings (was living in humid NC at the time) so I chalked it up to condensation in the cylinder heads from the previous night that was just purging itself out. I wasn't very good at letting the car cool down and always drove "spiritedly" so that may have been a compounding factor.

I never had any other issues with the car. But it wasn't lowered (LOL).

T.

I started to notice when I drive the car hard, park it, and start it up later the white smoke apears... usually thats when it happens... try to watch for it, drive hard on your way home, rev high, park it over night or for a few hours, and start it up, youll get the white smoke

Easy fix. Ease off the last driving mile, let it idle a couple of minutes before you shut it off for the night. 911 owners have been doing that since '64.

I had a similar concern

And video'd my start - granted it was in the winter. The 6Speed community confirmed that it was "normal". Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8FxTFo4STU
