White Smoke & The Dealer
white smoke at startup occurs on flat motor designs, its normal. the smell however is not and if its smoking each time you start it its not normal. also if smoking on one side only its a concern.
your SA sounds awful, find another. Make the drive to Mckenna if possible, Huy is great to deal with and knows his way around the car.

if it smells anything different from oil - I would be worried. smoke puffs out for like, 2-3 seconds top then stops.
I also agree, white smoke was always a sign of a coolant gettig into cylinders - it is not good at all and should not happen. not sure what boxters engines got so different so it allows anything but oil to get into cylinders? where can it come from?

And video'd my start - granted it was in the winter. The 6Speed community confirmed that it was "normal". Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8FxTFo4STU
That video looks more like normal exhaust on a cold morning. I have had the plume of white smoke a few times on my 3.6 997. It comes out as soon as the car is started.
It seems to happen to me if I only run the motor for a VERY short time i.e. pulling the car out of the garage to wash it. Same things happens with my wife's Boxster.
If it happens every time there may be a bigger issue.
Best,
Matt

whats up guys, been a little while since I posted on this thread.
My car has been smoking since I purchased it. Everytime I took it to the dealership They said they need to see it for themselves to try and fix it. So For a week straight I recorded a video of my car starting up until I was able to get a video of it happening. I took it in with the video, My car has been there since OCTOBER 18th. They have taken the engine out of the car, and are taking the motor apart piece by piece. They are replacing a couple of things. I dont know too much detail but I will definatley post Everything here when I get it back... The adviser told me hopefully by NEXT friday, thats about 20days w/o my car...
They acually gave me a rental car too, 2009 Cayenne, she asked me to bring the cayenne in 2maro and switch it with a 2011 cayenne, or a 2011 panamera... Im acually excited
Also wondering has anybody every had any luck trying to LEMON their PORSCHE? I heard its impossible to do

I haven’t exercised the Lemon Law on a Porsche, but I have on a Honda. In Texas they have alternatives for binding arbitration or court. In binding arbitration, the decision is final on the auto maker, but the individual can take it to court if they lose in the arbitration. If a court is used the manufacturer can appeal, which provides a long, expensive program for them to put you through. I used to do briefings for a living, but I found binding arbitration surprisingly easy. They bought back my car. Look in your warranty book for the exact requirement in your state. If you need more details, let me know.

a little update...Today I got a call from Porsche, They got the go ahead to replace my Engine...WTF? I have no idea why. They said they cant figure out the cause of the smoke. It should be ready by friday afternoon. I will try to do a full write up for you guys or scan the paper work I get from them. Pretty wild how a new porsche with around 10k on it, needs an engine replacement

DTLA Porsche service is absolute trash and the same could be said of Newport Beach. I used to have a 986 Boxster and heard some weird noise coming from the drivetrain. They said there was nothing wrong with it, noise can't be reproduced, they checked everything blah blah blah...A day later my intermediate shaft fails on me and I get stranded.
Well, Newport Beach Porsche scraped the side of my bumper on a 1 month old Porsche right in front of my eyes as they were parking it. What did they offer me? A goodwill oil change for free....all hell broke loose after that...

Looks like something DFI related imho. crazy oil consumption rate + smoke.
Hey guys I just uploaded the little video I took onto my computer, Ill be posting it soon...I also have another video I took when my car wa "TRIPPPING OUT" after that video porsche didnt know what to say, excepty "youll be getting a new motor" ...I will put them up on youtube when I get a chance and post them for you guys... I should be getting my car back in 24hrs... atleast I hope...She said I had pistons damage, and that they were worn much more than they should be "something mechanically wrong with a component in the engine caused it" , Oil was leaking through the cylinder, compression and leak down tests were way off, they replaced my a/c compressor (dont know why), replaced my front led day time running lights (discolored AGAIN)...Thats about it for now, hopefully if I pick it up soon Ill have more 411 for you guys. Stay tuned
The 997.2 has direct injection, correct?
I know that Audi has had problems specifically on their FSI engines (direct injection), specially the 4.2FSI used in the rs4 and r8. Even the little 2.0t a4's have shown some problems with this issue of carbon build up which damages the pistons.
But that still wouldn't explain the white smoke. Blue smoke= oil, white smoke= coolant. Damaged cylinder header perhaps? Maybe head gasket?
Very weird story my friend, keep us updated.
