My Journey Starts: from GT3 to 997.2

As some of you know, in less than 1 year I've gone through the following:
1) 2006 C2S Cab
2) 2009 997 Turbo
3) 2010 GT3

Yesterday my '09 C2S coupe was delivered (w/ 3,400 miles). Some key options include:
* 6spd
* Sport Chrono
* Nav
* Bluetooth
* XM
* Bose

Pic attached (sorry, just a dealer pic as the weather here in Pgh is terrible)

So for those that don't know, I decided to consolidate to 1 car for myself. Sold my GT3 last week and my C63 is pending sale. I love Porsche, especially the Carrera, and needed back seats for my kids (4 and 2). Otherwise, I would have kept my GT3 as my DD.

I think my conversion to the 997.2 would have been MUCH easier coming from the turbo than the GT3. For me, the turbo was a phenomenal sport touring car. But the GT3 was a raw, awesome machine: the clutch was stiff as hell with a pleasant notchy feel, the engine just roared and rattled teeth at high revs, and overall was the most connected car I've ever driven.

So although I know the 997.2 is a great car -- and can even hold its own against a GT3 on the track (with some minor mods and a great driver), it's just too tame out of the box for me.

So, next week I'm getting Cargrahics side mufflers and the Sharkwerks bypass. The stock (non PSE) exhaust is just lame IMHO. So I can't wait to get some sound back from the car.

Outside of those mods, I'm considering a flash if the butt dyno gain is noticable and some new shoes. Not likely dropping the car (given DD) or messing with the suspension at all (stock seems fairly well done for what it is).

In all, I'm very happy with my decision and I believe I chose the best car to fit my purpose. This is not to say I don't shed some tears in missing my GT3.

Am I the only one that went from a 2010 GT3 to a 997.2? Although I'm not trying to mod my C2S to be a GT3 with back seats, I would like to hear from anyone with any comments on must-have mods to "meet in the middle".

You will be the ultimate tester. By having all three of the late model Carrera variants you can really compare them. Look forward to hearing about your likes/dislikes.

quick question....

Did your Gt3 have a roll bar? I was just curious as I had thought the rear of a gt3 (back seat area) was the same as a stock 997 just with no actual seat pads... making for a seat add possibility if [added seats were purchased? I know it is a strange question.....

Yeah, surely rear seats could have been added to the GT3. Would have cost some $, but probably much less than the financial hit you've taken by buying and selling all those cars in the past year. Just a thought.

My understanding is that only the 07 and 08 GT3 have the seatbelt mounting bosses and the seat back mounting bosses in place.

The 2010 GT3's do not come with the seatbelt and back mounting bosses as there was a change in the production of the shell.

He still needs to get a 2010 TT (a major improvement over his '09 TT). After all it has back seats.

Oh, I've stayed well clear of the turbo sub-forum for that very reason

Yup, lost $ on each transition, but not as much as one might think. It's all on the buy side as they say. I don't really regret any of those changes. For now, just flying with a lower profile.

The money lost by changing this frequently could have paid for another car as a DD. Plus you modded the Turbo . If one adds the expense lost on the Turbo + the loss on the Gt3 it makes for one very expensive 997S.

I even understand that sometimes changing the car is a realization that the one before was simply not the right car . But then there are times where I wonder if the constant changing is more geared towards the excitement of the novelty of the new car . In short .. after the exhaust on the 997.2S and more expense do you think you will have reached a Porsche car buying goal ?

I hope this 997s is the car for you but given that the Gt3 and 997tt are Porsches finest offerings .. and considering the possible redesign in 2 years .. the pattern of the new car high followed by the selling point low can get repetitive and expensive.

Just something to consider -- a new car can never fill a void in ones life. At the end of the day whether it's a 997tt, a gt3 , or a 997S or any other car .. when the novelty wears off you will still be left with facing your own happiness. I hope this 997S work for you Taylor . Best wishes with the Cargraphic exhaust.

^^^Have you been prying into my checking account -- how much $ do you think I've really lost on this? I can say that it's not enough for a DD.

As the title indicates...it's a journey, not a destination. The modest (to me at least) money lost was less than the value gained by the journey.

But you're right, one car will never satisfy -- it's a journey for me -- a hobby if you will.

I think I've read another thread from somebody going from a GT3 to an S and not regretting it, but it wasn't a 2010. He said you can still track the S then take his wife out to dinner after, or similar. I'm surprised you didn't go back to a Turbo though.

^^^The turbo was a fun stop along the way, but I would probably not go back to a 997.1 turbo over the C2S. For me, I de-sensitized to the speed of the turbo. So to me, the 997.1 turbo on a round 2 would have otherwise been only a status symbol over the C2S. Now when the next gen turbo comes out (the 991 or whatever it will be called) -- I may be back in that saddle -- who knows.

I made the same move, from my 07 Gt3 to an S Cab. I just wasn't getting the use out of the Gt3 to justify keeping it for occasional track use, and I too wanted a rear seat just in case

You will have an adjustment period!! But all should be OK after that. I love my Cab as the perfect street machine

Totally understand your need though for more egde - first thing I did was add sports exhaust and a short shifter, and I ride around in sport PASM mode a lot ...

Good luck!

Chris
