How would you replicate a st. wheel ring?

How would you replicate a st. wheel ring?
I was wondering how would anyone replicate a ring on a steering wheel? A simple 3M tape in red would do/or take it to an upholstery shop for a simple cover job or would the tape leave some unwanted sticky marks upon removal (on a standard MF tiptronic st. wheel)?
