Oil change?

My '07 C2S didn't get driven much this past year -- less than 1,000 miles. It will have been in storage for 6 months when I get back to it in May, which will be the anniversary of the last oil change. I'm assuming I should take it directly to the dealer for an oil change. Sound right?

IMO, it's the hod/cold cycles that degrade oil quality. If you haven't even started the car in 6mo. and it has less than 1000 miles on the oil, I wouldn't bother. I'd have it serviced every 2 years.

^I think people want to do what's in the best interest of the cars they love. Also, spend 100k on a car, and you want to do what's best for it.

I don't, which is why I'm posing the question. I have heard in the past that oil changes are prudent every X thousand miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Of course I'd prefer not to enrich the dealer, even if it is good for the economy.

You should get the oil changed after long periods of non-use.......correct. Whether you take it to the dealer would be your choice. In all honesty, the oil change itself does not require any special tools, other than someone to be carefull with the proper torque of the drain plug. (which is typically 18lbs for aluminum cased engines).

So you wouldn't necessarily agree that it's just hot/cold cycles that degrade the oil but also mere time? I'll probably change it in any event to be safe, so I'm really asking more for intellectual curiosity.

I believe in both....... pure usage of the car, times when you may just do a slight warm-up, but not get the car to full operating temp, the normal driving use............. but........... also when just sitting. I would need to find the write-ups I've seen (and they make sense) but, when the car is sitting the oil does become impacted.

That is why you may see where some folks get the "winter service" before they put the car up, but what really should be doing it getting the change after the car has sat.

I wonder if those write-ups reference synthetics and if degradation is the same with those as with conventional lubricants.

From what I've read most technical reports will compare conventional and synthetics across several criteria. The general rule is that degradation with synthetics still occurs but at a much slower rate. Goes along with the synthetic's extended times between oil changes.

But even with that, why would anyone risk damage to a $100K automobile just to save the cost of an oil change? Cheap insurance if you ask me. Should there be a warranty issue with the engine I'm sure that if there was the least little thing astray with the condition of the oil it might raise a red flag.

I have never heard the word "impacted" used for oil which sits.....
What does this mean??

Interestingly, I used to change the oil in my boat's diesel at the beginning of the season (spring), but most mechanics suggest changing it at the end of the season to remove contaminants which one apparently does not want sitting in the oil pan over the winter. There IS one OCD person in the yard who changes it both at the end of the season and again before splashdown in the spring.

When in doubt, get the oil changed. $75 is peanuts for peace of mind.

1K miles .. Tough decision . My general rule is 5K miles or 1 year whichever comes first .

But I ask this question --- all those new leftover 09 cars still on some dealership lots .. do you guys think dealerships are changing the oil ?
