Lightbulb Lightest wheels + tires combo ?

I'm curious to know what could possibly be the lightest wheels/tires set up ?

I can see some 19's @ 20lbs (F) 24lbs (F) and tires weight may vary for few pounds depending of the model.

If i remember correctly, i've weighted a lobster/Pirelli 19's combo (F) at 47lbs or so inflated..

Let's say i save 5lbs per wheel on each corner, will i really feel it ?

Dymag carbon magnesium are light but cost about of $10K. If you look for 19" rims for street then you do not really have to care about weight.

If you look for racing rims than as it was told here several times - 18" Volk, CCW or humble OZ Allegeritas from Tirerack are light enough.

I've read a couple of times that Dymags leak air with time. So I would not suggest them.

If you're looking to save weight, I think you should get 18" wheels. They will be lighter.

For wheels I would look for:

-CCW
-HRE
-Fikse
-BBS
-Champion

AMT's are currently some of the lightest wheels I have seen. As light as Dymags and their prices are reasonable.

CCW's are not the lightest...I know I have them as my track wheels...they are awesome and very stong.

Volks are a very strong and light weight track wheel. I think they look nice and racey for the street too.

BBS E88's are suppose to be light too. Also Forgeline makes nice light strong wheels along with HRE and Champion.

Take a look at the HRE competition series, they are very light weight and you can feel the reduced un-sprung weights. I had the HRE C97s, front 19x8.5 at 18.5lbs and rear 19x11.5 at 21lbs.

Actually the Lobster/Pzero setup front comes in at 44lbs and the rears at 56lbs or 100lbs per side. This is off the top of my head, but I know I'm close. The lobsters weigh in at 22lbs front along with the 22lbs for the Pzero 235's and the rears are at 27lbs along with a 29lb rear tire puts us at 100lbs for the side.

They are not as light as magnesium but they are very light and well made. I love mine.

The best most effective thing to do in this area is brakes. You could have bought PCCBs.
Do you have them. You dont track right?

The lobsters are strong yet relatively light weight. A lot of people use them for track wheels. The only drawback I see is the 8" width of the front lobsters.

is this a real drawback ?

i mean: if i use 235-35-19.. It's wide enough ?

Jon I don't track my 997 but a lot of people who do go aftermarket move up to a 8.5-9" wide front wheel along with a 245/35/19. There isn't a lot of weight over the front wheels and if you use a good R compound tire you will be fine. A 8" wide front wheel is the minimum spec needed to support a 235 tire, optimum would be an 8.5" wheel.

I find even on my spirited canyon runs these cars like to push. You can only do so much camber with the OEM control arms so you can probably dial quite a bit of the push out with either a larger tire up front or some more negative camber. Ed or Ron or some of the other track junkies can elaborate more on this than I can.

Dave
