Upgradin' door speakers... (or: how to fix the crappy Bose system)
after driving my cab for over a month, i came to a conclusion.
like someone said before, our car does not make it hi-fi-friendly
as long as i have some sort of music in the background, i will be fine..
i am gonna enjoy my speakers at home.. and enjoy my drive in the car

I think a lot of people here are missing the point.
Unless you spend thousands and thousands of $$ you will never have the best sounding sound system in your 997.
What Steve and I did was not to drastically improve the sound but the get the things that the CRAPPY ( yes i said it as well ) PCM does not offer.
In 2010 i think every car should have at least bluetooth and ipod integration.
Ok so our cars are 2007's doesn't matter. My 2007 Bmw E92 335 had all those things and a way better Nav then PCM 2.1.
Yes 2010 997's have PCM 3.0 and it much better then the PCM 2.1 we swapped in our cars. But still nowhere near my Pioneer Avic Z110-BT.
If i had a 2010 997 with PCM 3.0 i probably wouldn't change it. But in my case , in Steve's case and many others it a no brainer.
PCM 2.1 is kind of like what bmw's were putting in they're 7 series back in 99' - 2000' .
It's so far back in terms of technology.
It truly does sting a little when you drive such an amazing car with such horrible tech.
Yes a Porsche is meant to be driven but some things need to change with the times.
As for the look of going for an aftermarket head unit like ours. Steve said it best.
With a bezel from Loi and a Pioneer Avic or Kenwood it looks as though it came strait from Germany like that.
Not one person that stepped into my car since i've had it in the past 3 weeks has noticed that i had a aftermarket head unit.

High end Bose compares low-end Grado in same way as to any other brand. Bose simply has no know-how on good quality manufacturing techniques and has no good quality materials for production, they try to compensate using dirt-cheap low quality membranes with electronic voodoo but it is not nerly the same. It took several decades to most companies like B&W to master those technologies how to make a perfect loudspeaker or how to make close to perfect dome in the headphone, and only thing Bose has unfortunately is hype and marketing.
@thread
haven't had the time to check the OE speakers yet but i will soon. I really hope it's not 1ohm or 2ohms..
Its a small noisy sports car.
- The interior volume's shape and surfaces are awful for audio playback.
- The tires make a ton of rumble noise on the road
- The other traffic makes a lot of noise
- The engine drones on behind you
- The wind whistles and blasts around the car adding more noise
Good luck with the project.
Minok.
Why reply if you don't care or can't hear the crappy audio Porsche have sold us?
I am VERY interested in Jon8's views as he obviously knows sound, and I for one would much prefer not to have to replace the head unit.
As for your points:
- Interior noise: I had a 996 C4S before my 997.2 C4S and the sound quality difference is huge - it also has a small cabin.
- The 996 has a similar tires size and again the sound was very good.
- I'm pretty sure if you were driving a Bentley, there would be "other traffic making noise".
- The engine noise in the 997.2 is far less than the 996.2. The cabin is actually very quiet compared.
- I'm pretty sure the wind "whistles and blasts around the car" with other vehicles besides 911's.
If the stock audio is "good enough" for you, then why post at all? I had to read through your post to follow the thread...

No highs, no lows, must be Bose
Agree. The Bose system is below average for a car in the price range. It also uses a lot of proprietary components that are difficult to modify. Best bet is to junk the entire system and start from scratch. Well worth it as you get voice command, up to date to nav, Pandora etc, and an IPod interface that works. You can pick and choose how crazy you want to go with amps a speakers.
Agree, exactly what I did and great improvement.

Agreed, that's why I didn't order Bose in my car. Bose are only good for headphones.
