I just bought my car a while ago, and I didn't think about this when I was registering the car, but they are asking me for a smog... I bought this from a pvt party, does this make a difference? I always thought that the requirement for newer cars was more than 4 yrs (car is just over 4 yrs old), but I could be wrong.

yes you do need a smog. the rule says for cars more than 4 yrs old, you would need. So 2010,2009,2008,2007 cars won't have to do smog, anything older (2006 in your case) would need one.

it should pass w/o problems and it'll cost ~$50

 

yes, anytime you change ownership you need to smog.
