997.1 c2s or clk63 bs
Need input from someone familiar with both cars. I drove clk63 black series at Mercedes Challenge event and was very impressed. In my opinion, on track it handled as well as F430. But what about day to day ownership? Does CLK get a little boring after a while? Anyone uses it as a daily driver during warm season? Are you looking forward to driving it as much as your P-car? What about reliability? Thank you!
Can;t speak for the CLK63 but I have an SL63 that I drive daily. I would say that in heavy commute traffic/sto and go, it is a bit jumpy. I had an SL550 that was better suited for low end driving in heavy traffic. On the open road the 63 is a great engine. Every afternoon I say I am going to drive the C2 Cab the next day and just end up back in the SL. I think it's because the stick is a hassle to drive home in heavy traffic. I had a CLK350 and 550 too and they are great cars and very comfortable just not the 'fun' factor in Porsches. Keep in mind the CLK is now discontinued, replaced by the E series convertible. The early take on it is nice car, but no fun.
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it but, I believe, you don't realize what clk63 bs is. It is AMG Black Series, 507 bhp car, only 367 were brought in the US in 2008. It has no rear seats and its styling is similar to DTM car. It can't be compared to the regular clk or, even to the SL63. I drove SL63 at Pocono and was rather disappointed with its handling. It seems more like a boulevard cruiser rather than a sports car to me.
Sorry I missed the fact that it was a 'black series'. My answer would be the same though. I would not buy the CLK regardless because the entire series has been discontinued. Whatever you pay for it, you will likely lose alot of money on it. Why compare a 500+ HP CLK63 to a C2S? My C2 has slightly less HP than the C2S and it is not near as quick as the SL63 with 518 HP so if speed and power is your thing, go for the Mercedes. If you want fun with more than enough power, go for the C2S or look at a Turbo which will keep up with or beat the 6.3. The CLK may not have a back seat in that configuration, but it was designed for one and regardless of the power, it still would seem like a family coupe to me. This coming from a person who has driven Mercedes for 15 years and only recently got into Porsches. Regarding the SL63, I think your assessment is correct that is is a blvd cruiser. I would add again though that the SL550 makes a better daily driver than the SL63. The 63 with 518HP is just too much and too much torque for heavy rush hour traffic. Regarding reliability, I have never had any problems with a Mercedes but I never get beyond about 30k miles. Good luck, my guess is you will enjoy either one.
Thanks, guys. Could anyone comment on the day to day usability of CLK63 BS? Will it be possible to drive 80 miles round trip once or twice a week? Or is it too stiff of a ride? As I mentioned, I only drove it on the track and it was awesome there.

that is correct, this wardrobe on wheels is no comparison with 997 Porsches.
It is a regular sedan and it drives like any other mercedes sedan. Great choice for a DD car but got nothing to do with autosport.

I also would agree with the CLK63BS. I almost bought one at the first of the year but needed the back seats. I bought a 2010 E63. I sold my 997.2 C2S when I bought the Mercedes. My Mercedes was just better the C2S, and that's a comment from a guy who has owned several Porsche over the years. I enjoy driving it as a daily driver.
I also disagree with a previous post about the losing a lot of money on the Black Series. The CLK63BS has depreciated a lot. If bought right, it should hold a large percentage of the your purchase price. They don't make the CLK anymore, but more importantly, they only made a a few of the CLK63BS...Buy it and enjoy...

Interesting take on the MB over the Porsche. I would rather have the Porsche than the CLK. YMMV.
Found an interesting article regarding a '07 CLK63 AMG BS... they felt the Porsche GT 3 was a better car (implied), and as comfortable a DD car, for less MSRP than the Benz... (see last 3 paragraphs of the article)

There are brand new (2008) CLK63 BS's sitting at dealership lots still advertising the ~$138,000 msrp. Look on autotrader. There are BS's with less than 5,000 miles going for ~$85,000. When negotiating for the one that I ultimately did not buy we had agreed on $78,000, 2500 miles, mint, babied.
IF you can find one, buy it. It really rivals a GT3, surpasses a C2S.
As for DD? Sure. Lack of rear seats and inclement weather-driving about the only downside. The 6.3 engine is an engineering masterpiece. Very solid IMO. And yes, it can handle itself on a track brilliantly. Plus total stealth-factor. If something happened to my well-loved 911S, i'd still consider getting one as a replacement.
FWIW: Clarkson drives one

Any manufacturer can produce crazy HP and torque with a 6.1 L motor and a price tag of $135,000.
The fact that the Porsche does what it does while using a boxer 6 motor displacing 3.6 or 3.8L, while also delivering gas mileage that makes one feel like a responsible citizen, that is the art of the Porsche.
