track car: 993 vs......
If a P-car is not a must, I have an idea. How about a 350 or a 370Z? I had a 350Z with the second gen engine (higher revving), and it had eibach springs on it. The car was absolutely a blast to drive! The car comes with LSD standard from factory so I was drifting all over town
It certainly was not as fast as my 997, but not modded like my 997 either.
The only problem with the car was the transmission, the gear changes were hard sometimes. Not ideal for track where you need to shift really quick... But I don't know about the 370Z to be honest. I saw a fully modded (including slick tires, brembo brakes, etc.) one on the track last weekend, and it looked bada$$!

spec boxster is a great car, lotus is a great car, even miata. 350z is quite heavy ad even with rebuilt suspension it is not that much fun imho. i would vote fo miata, really. i have had it in my past and it was quite a fun pure stock, properly modded for a track it would be even more fun.
a nice 996 is posted today on the rennlist member-to-member for sale forum today, but obviously you have to be a member to see the ad. Good mods for the track, IMO. No affiliation, just passing the info along.
nissan is not that great... those nizmo modded cars are all looks and not that much more.

The OP says he is looking for a hard top. Miata might be fun, but they don't have so much HP. I agree with you on Lotus.
The Nismo modded from factory is BS... They don't have any real mods over the stock model, just aero. The 350Z might be heavy but they are balanced pretty good.

mojo factor is not that good but heck, this car can run. i do have full respect for miatas. hard top is doable too, plenty of people do that.
Yeah, I know it's crazy to buy a pristine example and then track it and mod it, but I'll have a tough time buying a car that already shows signs of significant wear and tear. As for buying a car that's already been modded, to me that usually means someone has already been driving it hard.
With an E36 M3 a few years back, even though I tracked it for a few DE's per year for a few years, I was able to keep it pristine cosmetically. So when I went to sell it, I was able to still get a pretty decent price - less than if it hadn't been modded or tracked I'm sure, but still a good price.

both lous a miata are bit underpowered but miatas are cheap, fun ad can be turboed. if you burn `er engine - just drop in a new one as it costs hardly about a half of our 997 suspension.

Or do the Flying Miata conversion - Chevy V8!
That IS nice!
A few thoughts:
Cayman S is quite a quick car and with a few mods (suspension/tires) much quicker. I would not turbo it (defeats the purpose). When I owned one, was always reading about people blowing their engines with track use. Dont know how common it is though.
E36 M3 are great track toys and are bullet proof.
Spec Miatas: fun cars. Teach you momentum driving. If you want to be a good driver a great place to start.
Same with Lotus....... a track car out of the box. Low cost of consumables and less wear and tear due to less weight.
Bottom Line: If you want to just do DE's any car with a few mods will do the trick. You can learn the art of driving from those.
When you want to be fast you lighten the car and put on a suspension and then you are on the slippery slope. After that you can have a full blown modded car for personal fun and bragging rights or you can go racing. If teh latter, it all depends on what class you want to do. I have friends who started in the Chump Car series. Besides the silly looking cars, everything else was hard core racing and what seems to be a genuine example of "the real" thing.
Just my 2 cents.

if street driving is rendered out completely and we start speaking about dedicated track toy - boy, it is whole world of options. but it was not a topic OP started I presume.

Not sure how durable they are. They certainly dont look as well put together as Porsches. Might be worth visiting a Lotus forum and asking what issues their cars have. Unless there are ex-Lotus drivers on this forum who could answer the question.
