Official Porsche IPOD hook up - poor sound quality?
I had my dealer install the ipod hook up for my 2007 997. However the sound quality is not great and in between tracks on when the music is quiet you can hear quite a lot of hiss like radio interference (you play it on the fm setting even thought it is a direct wire connection not fm modulated). Anyone else have this problem?
The ONLY way to get it to sound half way decent is having a direct connection.
I hope the stealership didn't charge you a lot of money to do this. You could have done this yourself for less than $100.00 from any Apple store or even Radioshack.
Good luck!
Steve
PS: Get your $$$ back from the stealership and invest in a good aftermarket head unit. You will get many more great features and the sound will be much better.
PSS: Probably the ipod is connect via cable to the PCM to the antenna. Again, a very poor way to do what you want done.
On your 997.1, unlike a 997.2, you can't connect to the PCM via a cable. The Porsche solution is an FM modulator, and even if it is inserted into the antenna leads like a 3rd party one I purchased, it is still subject to the shortcomings of FM (like lame frequency response and presence of some noise). It is best to install a Dension or equivalent that ties directly into the fiber optic loop system. It will give you much better sound as well as the ability to control via the PCM.

Yes, indeed the Porsche "official" Ipod connector for the 997.1, as others have stated it a glorified FM modulator, but it does fit neatly with the car. Again, you can get better performance/clarity at a much cheaper price with a run of the mill AutoPilot FM modulator for 60 bucks.
Thanks guys for the info. The dealership told me that the ipod hooked directly into the fiber optic of the pcm, guess not as I do have to switch on the fm radio and search for AUX to hear the ipod...
This is what you are referring to, correct?

Please tell me my parts manager told me wrong. I have 997.2 and asked to have the ipod goodies installed. He said "don't do it.....FM Modulated.....Won't be happy....." I'm really tiring of CD's, XM, terrestrial.....
Can I have the ipod directly connected. please, please, please?

PCM 2.1 has an OEM iPod adapter - uses a FM modulator.
PCM 3.0 has an OEM iPod adapter - direct output (although older cables will not charge firewire based iPods. An updated cable is necessary - one with a USB/iPOD hybrid - to charge newer USB based iPods.)

Porsche should be ashamed to have released such garbage with their name on it. In any, even average sized, city, an FM modulator is complete crap.
There are so many options out there ranging from integrating into the fiber optics, splicing into the antenna cable or just simply adding an aux port.
I just think that the modulator is crap. Even the monster brand products are bad.
