160+mph in a dream
160+mph in a dream
Last night I had a dream...
And in this dream, I was driving home from a far away place.
I was coming off the main road onto the freeway on-ramp and I decided to press firmly on the accelerator pedal and see how well the car would respond to in-gear acceleration and PDK shifting. I was in "sports" mode and probably already at 60mph.
The PDK dropped from 5th to 3rd in an instant and the howling of the engine reverberated from the rear, ricocheting off the on-ramp's wall running adjacent to the freeway. With the howl approaching the well-noted pitch of red-line, another shift came in even faster moments, allowing a subtle pause for the wind noise to be heard in the distance.
The roaring of the tyres increased until I had noticed that the cat's eyes were streaming in-line into a near-blur. The scenery flashed by until they, too, started to blur.
The night sky was bright and clear, the road was completely empty. The tarmac began a slight radius to the right; but even at this speed, considerable g-forces was felt. With foot down 2/3rds, PDK would change gears with a forceful shove against the body as the entire car lurched upwards. HIDs aimed into the far distance were deflected upwards by the shift of the rear weight whilst the self-levelling motors would scurry to keep the beams angled down.
From 100 to 150 the car would keep its linear accelerative force. By the time the faint, but distinct, pair of red tail lights appeared in the horizon, I glanced at the display of 162 and decided to apply the brakes. I was still at 100mph but the car felt as every way as stable as at 70 or even at 150. This is a true autobahn slot-car.
The last dream I had like this was more than 10 years ago... Whilst quite exhilarating, I don't think I would like to do this again.

The car is very stable at these speeds. I've never done this on a public road though. I do have a dream to drive the autobahn in a Porsche some day.
I have gone 160+ many times though...on the track. At Sebring the highest I get is full throttle out of turn 16 down the back straight and hit 140mph before hard threshold braking into turn 17.
At Daytona I am at 140 out of NASCAR 4 down the front straight, actually is really not straight but a bend with a banking on it and I hit 165mph before hard braking into turn 1 of the infield part of the course.
Ahhhh....so much fun.... but actually I enjoy the technical corners much better than a straight.
