My dad has a 997 Carrera S and I just came back from a short drive. The car was on, in neutral, with the handbrake on and the engine just sputtered. We were both out of the car and it sounded like somebody just touched the throttle.

Any thoughts?

A/C cycling on or off? The engine will compensate for the change in load by increasing or decreasing the idle speed as necessary.

 

What year is the car and how many miles ? Does it " sputter " whilst driving ? Did the CEL trip ?

If the car is 4/5 years old my guess would be ignition coil packs and plugs need to be replaced.

 

has the 30k service been done? if not and its time, +1 on coils and spark plugs.

 

The fan was on but not the AC

The car is a 2006 with mileage just north of 40,000. It does not sputter while driving and there is no check engine light.
