ReSpray/Paint Hood

The front hood of my 997 has about a dozen rock chips in it... the bumper is fine.

I'm thinking about having it re-sprayed/painted... its all Black (not metallic), the local guys who repainted a black bumper on my Black Infiniti QX56 leased vehicle did a crappy job with much orange peel in it. It was a leased vehicle anyways.

So I need a good painter in the Atlanta area... any suggestions? Any idea what a job like this might cost?

It might run you $400-500 to paint the hood.

I expect to have it done right, it will run at least $500, and likely more depending on how much prep is required.

Mark...... I usually hear of two places, one being Performance in the Alpharetta area on Hembree (the place with the smashed up 911 on a spinning platform), but, seems that Magnum in Marietta gets more attention.

Great post.

question. do you think a clear bra would have prevented the rock chips?
After this paint job are you going to add a clear bra?

im on the fence with a clear bra.

I never worried about a 800.00 clear bra on all my other cars, if they got chipped bad, I would re paint for 300 - 500 bucks.

Clear bra would NOT have saved my hood... it almost makes me think the last guy did 80 down a gravel road behind a pick up... there's a small nick in the windshield too, but it hasn't turned into a star and start spreading... The hood chips are like half way up on the hood, I think the clear bra on the hood only goes up like 8"? Mine are like 20-22" from the nose.

The front bumper doesn't have chips in it, but you can tell some debris has worn a little bit... to clear bra it now, I'm thinking they'd show underneath even more???

You can have the entire hood wrapped. Having just the lower portion of the hood protected does not do much to protect the paint as the 911's hoods are quite slanted.

Good quality clear bra would have prevented or greatly reduced the amount and severity of the chipping. Have had clear bra on my car for 3 years and there are no chips in the front fascia of the car, period. There is however evidence of impacts on the clear bra which is doing the job it was intended to do.

Good point. Repainting cost is often less than the clear bra cost, and between repaints, touch-up can help keep it looking decent. With clear bra, the blemishes from rock hits can't be hidden as well as paint chips can. And despite how good the newer clear bras look, they still aren't as good looking as having no clear bra.

Yes, I know Hennessy Porsche uses Performance Collision for all their cars. I've never done business with them, but I hear they do great work. My brother's Audi A4 was there for about 6 weeks being repaired. The insurance company almost totalled his car because Performance was quite expensive compared to most. They also take a bit longer to turn around jobs. Having said that, the work they did was top notch. Panels lined up and the paint was factory-spec.

I have experience with both Performance and Magnum. You can do well at either of those two, IF you are picky, and upfront about it. Then, at pickup, if it has to be redone, let them know. Both shops want to make you happy.

I have full clear braw over front hood and fenders. Doesn't show at all and don't have a single blemish after 14K miles.

Mine was done at Premier in the bay area.

100% agree...... When I had the 04'C4S it only had the (at that time) traditional bumper and up to headlights done = 25% hood at best. I had a small chip mid-hood at some point. The 997.2 I just traded, I had opted for the total front clip and was VERY pleased with that decision, being the original owner. I also know locally here that the installer at Hennessy uses a new film that lays glass-flat and looks great! My thought is for the 900-1200 for a total front to be covered (lets say) outweighs a respray, where, no matter what you have..........its been re-sprayed for some reason.

Like anything, it looks much nicer on some colors than others. (I think white is one you want the total or just bumper, but dont stop mid-section.....)

Good luck....BR
