Ever use winter tires for DE?

I'm going to do a DE in November at Lime Rock. Almanac says low to high of 38-51. I imagine once the tires are warmed up PS2s will do just fine. I have winters, but I'm guessing they would only offer better grip than the summer tires at colder temps than these?

Any one have any experience with this?

Thanks,

DRP

Considering several folks (usually in novice groups) inadvertently or intentionally run all-seasons, you could worse....CONSIDERING.... you have high performance snows, i.e., Dunlop M/D 3's, Michelin Alpin, Pirelli snows (whatevers)......

I would not ever considering it on dedicated snows, i.e. blizzaks, studded, etc.

You would likely want to reconsider running even h.perf snows however. I'd be surprised if anyone was running a DE with possible transitional weather. Everyone will either be running track tires (planning for dry or wet) or it will be a "planned" winter DE.

I don't think it would be dangerous, you'll just chew up some nice winter tires in two days which you have otherwise been able to keep for 2-3 years. Good luck, could be fun, certainly interesting.

Use your PS2's, winter tires is a bad idea at a DE IMO, unless there is snow.

if it snows, then track with the SUV instead.

NorthVan is good at passing Porsches on the track with his ex-Audi allroad.

That was a funny day! I did have good street tires on it, and it suffered from the same problem as all my other cars...a loose nut behind the wheel!

I bought a C4S in September last year that came with Nokian snow tires. Our last regional DE was in October and I intended to replace the ties in the spring anyway. After consulting with our PCA regional powers-that-be who gave their blessing, I did the two day event which was the first time I was on this particular track. Temperatures were quite chilly to begin each day, about 35 - 40 degrees as I recall, and there were more than a few off track excursions resulting from other drivers not getting their summer - track tires up to temp before going "flat-out". I had no problems in that regard as snow tires work quite well in the cold! I would estimate my lap times were probably 10-15 seconds slower (2:20 - 2:25) than what I'm now running with my 997.1Turbo and Potenza RE-11's though. Actually they were quite good to learn on - lots of feedback and very predictable. My instructor that day also thought I probably set the unofficial track record (since we didn't actually time it) for lap time run on snow tires since no one could remember anyone else ever doing it! Lots of fun and everyone got a good chuckle out of it. Suffice it to say, the tires weren't worth saving by the end of the event but still were good enough to safely make a 200 mile drive home. Go for it and have lots of fun!
