In the market for a slightly used 997 - choices are a C4S Cab or Targa4S - I'm well aware of the advantages of the coupe j Just curious if others had a similar struggle. I know Targa's are more rare but I don't have a problem waiting. I've got two small kids (out of car seats) and it appears that the backrests of the rear seats in a cab have a more forward angle to them - they would only be used in case of an emergency.

I've heard of creaking issues with the Targa top - can anyone comment? Any other issues with them?

I've used search the forums and haven't seen many comparisons.

Just when I think I really want a targa (more practical, can open and close top while driving, more secure, etc.) I see a Cab like this:

Cab all the way for me. I don't have any experience with a targa, but I enjoy the cabs. Coupe would be another good option; I'm just not sold on the benefits of a targa.

 

I don't know much about Targas but why would you want to buy a 2010 997.2cab from a non-Porsche dealership at such a high price. It has 4K miles on it. People pay less than that even on cars that less than 100 miles on it sitting on dealers lots. You must spend sometime reading through all threads that are relevant to you using the search function after you log in. It will take a few days but is well worth the time spent on research. Go test drive both before the weather gets too cold. But buy it when the weather really gets cold because that's when no one is looking for one of these and the dealers really want them off their lots.

 

If you test dry the cab and the targa you will definitely have a preference. Only you can decide. I really like the Targas since you have a rear glass hatch that opens which is just much more convenient to access the rear seats. Have fun with the test drives.

 

Agreed - a test drive will settle this quickly...Targas look great - i just doubt you get the same "top down" feel (the wind rushing over you)...Nothing beats the feel of a convertible Porsche..I became addicted in 2002 when I bought a 2002 Box S.

I would think the difference in feel of the cab with top down versus the Targa with the top open would be significant. So it just depends on what "feel" you are going for.

I wasn't going to go into price, but I think that cab is over-equippped(my opinion) and you could buy a new 2010 4S for about $103k today. That is for one with a list of $118k or so. Certain of that.....

Agree. I thought I wanted a cab, hated it with the top up. Thought the coupe with the sunroof open was a better compromise than the cab with the top up. But, that's up to you.

 

I have a 2006 S Cab and a 2010 Targa 4S. I love them both. A few observations:
Targa does not replicate open top feel and I actually think it is louder with the roof open than the Cab.
Targa has much better visibility than Cab with Top Up does.
Targa top can be closed at speed if you need to take a call or have a conversation or it starts to rain.
Targa gets looks - not many around.
The Targa top creaks a bit - it racks when entering driveways/small bumps at an angle and sometimes a bit when its cold. Has not bothered me though.
I thought I'd use the glass hatch more than I do. It is a bit of a reach and I don't want to scratch paint.

If you live in a place where you can go top down alot, I'd get a Cab. If the weather is more variable, than a Targa is more versatile.

 

If it was a second car/weekend toy, Cab for sure. Nothing beats a complete top down drive.

I think they're two pretty different animals.
The cab is great, and I get the whole wind-in-the-hair thing.
Love it. If that's what's great for you, go for it. Don't look back.
But for me, if the function (ragtop) destroys the line of the car, it's a no-go.
IMO, the Targa is just a stunningly beautiful car. Really close to a wide-body hard top. I've never seen a pic that does it justice. Never.
Add to that the fact that the larger interior, back hatch, and roof screen make the thing immensely practical, and it's just a total winner.
For me. Somebody else might easily conclude otherwise.
I guess that's why they make both.
BTW if you decide to negotiate for one, play up the whole roof squeak thing.
Tell them you'll bring it in to the shop every time.
Do a search on this Forum and see how to really fix it if you do have problems.
Most dealers, and a lot of owners don't know.

 

My vote goes to a Cab .

The targa will never be a coupe.
The targa will never be a cab.
The fact that it doesn't strike either chord fully leaves the driver somewhat in limbo .

That's why it's rare . It's even tougher in resale. Add to the mix that it's new MSRP price is near that of a Turbo ... even places it in price limbo too.
