Looking to spend around $1000 to make a 997.2 C4 Targa sound better
Muffler bypasses are extremely loud and many will not have them. A set of custom tips is half your budget. For $1K, look around for a used set of catalytic converters. They perform half of the muffling. High flow cats also provide additional power greater than an aftermarket muffler. For a true low bucks solution, try the "gundo hack".
Just a reminder, the gundo hack on a 997.2 dfi sounds nothing like the 997.1. not worth it at all in my opinion, very slight change in sound.
If you are only limited to 1000 dollars( and you want a huge change in sound level), then you probably have a couple of choices -muffler bypass or center muffler delete. As far as i know i think only fabspeed offer them at the moment for the 997.2. Dont forget, a muffler bypass is very loud, filled with drone, and will get a lot of attention.
The second choice is the center delete muffler. Sharkwerks, AWE, and Fabspeed have different versions. This mod will be lower in sound compared to the side muffler bypass but will have a slight improvement over stock.

+1 for Sharkwerks 997.2 primary (center) muffler bypass. Best mod I did for < $1,000 IMHO. If you have a manual, an OEM short shifter would be a close second, it doesn't make it "sound" better, but it certainly makes it "feel" better.

+1 again on the Sharkwerks bypass. If they are out of stock, it's worth the wait to get it, imho, if you are looking at subtle but effective mod for the amt you are budgeting. I wouldn't do the gundo hack on a 997.2 either, as has already been mentioned.
Muffler bipass/delete from fabspeed.
should cost you no more then $700 labor and parts.
It will make your car 40 pounds lighter too.
It will be a lot louder, I loved it when done to my c2s.
Not too much extra power, the cats will be the ones to replace if you want to feel it.

Great question - I picked up my 997.2 Targa 4S three weeks ago and the only thing bothering me (well, besides rear visibility with the top open, but that's a pretty small complaint all things considered) is the exhaust note. It's even more subdued than my 996 4S!
I was thinking about the factory performance exhaust, but that's like $4k all-in and it doesn't seem to sound that good / make a big difference.
Alex / anyone - I just listened to the Sharkwerks video and it sounds great. Any take on how this compares to the factory performance exhaust? Seems like it's more throaty / at least as good and probably significantly better.
Thanks in advance.

I'd have to respectfully have a different opinion on the primary (center) bypass. When I did it on my 2009 C2S, It (yes) felt better driving but the sound difference was minimal at best. I made the mistake of listening to a few videos where the car was just started and not fully warm, where the exhaust does sound much better. Once warmed up, at the higher RPM ranges you do hear a slight difference, but, nothing even close as to what PSE is like. (or one of the hacks).
I think on the DFI cars you really need to go with alternate/modified secondaries vs just the center delete.

I second that!!
I have my rear center delete on my 997.2 and it sounds a bit louder, yes it is louder than stock, but still if u want a loud sound then you are better off with side mufflers..
A center delete would make it a bit louder without raising any attention, some like that.. and others wouldn't mind the loudness and would go for the modified side mufflers.. so its up to you to decide which one are you?
P.S. I have sharky's bypass for about a year now, and now im in the market of a set of side mufflers..
