longevity of sports exhaust ....
seems like I've read a post or two complaining that something loosens up and starts rattling in the exhaust. Is this common (covered under warranty I suppose, but still annoying)?
I know it can happen with the early 996 Porsche Sports Exhaust as my brother changed his muffler on one side 2 times and 1 on the other under warranty (warranty on the mufflers as the car was outside of warranty when this happened) after he got his.
I had a 2004 996 C4S for two years and put 18k miles on it without any issues and I now have a 2006 Carrera S which I've owned since day one without any issues. Makes me think that the problem is only on the early 996 Sports Exhaust but all Tequipment parts have, I believe, a 2 year warranty anyways so you'll be covered.

just go aftermarket. I debated on the whole PSE or not question and ultimately chose Fabspeed Maxflo and couldn't be happier. Not only do they look better, save weight and hassle w/ install but price installed (by my dealer no less) was half the price of the PSE parts alone (even from 'discount' Porsche part dealers)!
If you're in eastern PA, Fabspeed is located in Ambler just outside Philly (IIRC Sharwerks and/or someone else is around there too). Just go see them as I'm sure they'll have some side by side comparisons for you to hear in person.
Incidentally, the only time I [barely] sorta miss not having a quiet setting is when driving by a LEO...
