2006 997 nav install question

Hi Everyone,
I'm buying an 06 997 and wanted to plug a nav unit in it. I found on this site some good info but I wanted to know if the model years of the nav unit matter. For example...could an 08 997 Nav unit work with the 06 997 unit?

yes it can, you can consult with suncoast as they sell nav kits to be added to 997.1 PCM. or you can try your luck with units that get sold on ebay - you will need horizontal (if your car is C2) or vertical (if car is C4) DVD unit, harnesses and optical wires for connections. IMHO it is simpler to buy a kit from suncoast.

it is possible to find what exact model numbers you need if you search here and on rennlist and renntech web sites, it will probably save you about a grand if you find all needed parts from ebay, but, well, there is no guarantee it will all work, as usual, with ebay stuff.
i got mine from suncoast and dealer installed it, so total price went to almost $3k total.

for this amount of money you can install aftermarket unit like pioneer or kenwood and get better functionality but you will ruin OEM porsche look, so, choice is yours depending of what you want best.

I think the only way I would ruin the existing setup is to install an iPad setup. I have seen a few on other cars, never on Porsches. But man....is it awesome and will only get better as the Ipad gains more cell phone tethering capabilities and facetime video chat.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I have a similar question.
My '06 997 C2S has a PCM.
When I click the nav buttons, I get the message 'Nav is not installed'.

Am I to understand that, to add nav to my current setup, I have to buy a $2,000-plus new front end to replace the existing one, plus antenna, dvd drive, wiring and install?

you do not need new PCM (front end) in the 997.1 car. in 997.2 cars navigation is integrated into PCM internals so it requires a different unit, in 997.1 cars you just install DVD player for nav disk in the trunk, you need power harness and optical cable, also need to drill some holes to make cable go inside. speak with suncoast folks about this, they know all that.

For the 997 (gen 1), you keep your PCM radio unit. The navigation retrofit kit consists of the navigation DVD drive for the front trunk, antenna, and necessary hardware/cables.
