cold starts, long crancks?

I've been noticing on first morning start or when car is cold, that car does a long cranck before starting, after a drive if I fully stop and start the car again then it would cranck normal and fast, but its embarresed when the car does that.. I was reading that 997.2 from 09 some of them had a fuel pump problem, could this be a symptom... anyone having the same long cranck

It could be the HPFP or it may be a weak battery, given that it only happens when cold.

thanks Adias, hard to tell, first impression was the FP, I might get a video on my cell from a morning start and get the car to the dealer. that way I wont get the " could not duplicate " the problem since it only happens after the car its been sitting for a couple of hours..

I vote that it's a weak battery. Is it 4 or so years old?

Batteries are a weak link with these cars - what's your mileage and do you keep a battery maintainer on it?

I have an under 2 year old car and it was the battery!
I put it on a tender, and it cranks and starts super quick now.
The tender took 3 days to get the battery back up to full charge the first time I used it. That is not a good sign.......
Also, I do the 6K miles per year that porsche recommends, and it is driven everyday for 1 hour. Only in jan/feb does the car go on the battery tender. Now, I keep it on the tender all the time!!

I vote battery as well. I have an early 2009 997.2 and at 12,000 miles just had my HPFP replaced. It was hard to start in the ramp at work - killed three times. On the way home, it would bog dramatically if I gave it anything more than gentle throttle. Could not get over 3000 rpm. Porsche roadside assistance had it flatbedded (is that a word?) to the dealer. Took a week to get the parts and replace.
I have had previous Porsche battery problems and now keep the maintainer on it whenever it is going to sit for more than 4 days - so far - so good

FWIW, my 997.2 cranks noticeably longer on the first cold start in the morning than the rest of the day. Wasn't the case with either 993 or the 996 that I owned.

Mine starts fine - 1.5 yrs old, 6500 on the odo. I keep it on the CTEK maintainer always. However, cold is relative, and this is GA and the car stays in the garage. The temp in there is probably 40F or so lately - cold winter for us.

You may have the start of a HPFP failure. I suggest you have Gunter check it.
