Maintenance Costs for 20 years of Ownership = $21,500?
There is an intangible difference though .. it's the emotions associated with driving a newer and more high tech car over an old car that needs repair .
From a financial perspective your argument is logically plausible (keep in mind it includes speculation of investment growth ). Howvever .. one might argue that a Porsche 911 was impractical to begin with .
Inserting logic into emotional purchases leads to a conclusion drawn on an invalid argument .. thus (IMO) irrational.

Unless you are buying something ultra-collectible as an investment that you will never EVER drive, and you know it's something that by and large you will appreciate in value; every single car purchase one makes generally, is an instant loss situation- over both short and long-term.
Let's face it, our cars are nothing more than pricey "consumables" no matter what badge it's wearing. They are expendables that even if you buy it cash, brand-new, will require more out of your pocket as time goes on, while their net value spirals downward. Some, moreso than others. But they all depreciate.
The individual just has to determine what point of expense they are comfortable with and capable of sustaining; and know that higher the tier, the higher the stakes. That said, Porsche is not exactly the most pricey car to properly maintain, and their reliability is quite good, which bolsters their standing quite well, IMHO. (upgrades, mods, and racing nothwithstanding...)

what about engine rebuilds?
If your going for 20 years and you really drive your car, then that's easily 200,000 miles which I bet is rebuild time. So factor in at least an extra 10k + inflation.
