Extended Warranty? Is it worth it?
My take on it is the CPO purchase is a good way to go, but I don't go for aftermarket extended service contracts. I recently was looking into one for my Audi and was turned off by all the fine print that allows these providers to wiesel out of paying claims. They like to deny claims based on exclusions such as 'wear and tear'; even though the part may be a covered item, they have conditions to fall back on and deny the claims based on age/mileage.
If you think about it, the warranty company is in business to make money and statistically speaking they will likely win. Out of 10 contracts, there may be one or two people who have a major failure/claim and actually win but most will lose their money. I prefer to pay as needed per incident, and not worry about whether or not my warranty will cover it.

I can't imagine it being less than a nightmare to get a major claim fixed from a 3rd party provider. The only way I would consider an extended warranty is through the dealership I do all my business at. Otherwise, you simply have NO leverage (I'd imagine the warranty contract has arbitration language or forces you to sue them in some other state than where you live).
Technology and Warranties
I've had a bunch of plans and all have paid for the premium plus. The complexity of the vehicle usually settles it for me. Had an early allroad; the air suspension failed and was covered as did the tiptronic; each was more then the premium. Had one on a CooperS; the pano roof failed: covered and paid for the premium.
Latest is for an a3 w/ a dsg; still has time w/o a trans. issue but the premium is already 55% covered due to other issues.
Th 911 is really well built and the clock has lots of time. Again the pdk and the pasm will be the concern. As noted above : it's a risk issue.

Old thread but.....
36 additional mo.....50K (total miles) $2685.
all the way up to:
60 mo/100K $4972.
$100. deductable........complete platinum coverage....in the midwest.....by dealer.
The engine on the 996 was about $10,000......as my wife's car skiped a beat on the timing chain 10 months out of warranty.
If your plan is to keep a 997 well past 48 mo warranty I think a case can be made for extended......but it's your money.

I have an extended warranty through my dealer, and took the car in for a small issue. I forgot I was out of my initial warranty. I had to pay $50 deductable, issue fixed, I'm back on the road. I'd recommend, if you want an extended warranty, go through the dealership (but research to make sure they aren't raping you).
I personally hate gambling, and to me, insurance is nothing but legal gambling. Sure - the odds are in your favor, but can you afford to lose a hand or two over the next 3-5 years? If you answer "yes", then I'd avoid coverage.
I go by the philosophy "Don't gamble with what you can't afford to lose". Everything else works out.
Good luck!
Extended warranty insurance is VERY profitable for the companies who sell it and many companies sell it. That being the case, they are betting their hard earned profit $$'s that you won't need it. They back up that bet with lot's of real world repair history data before you hit the mileage limit. I'm putting my money on the guys that sell the stuff and using the money I save to properly maintain the car until I sell it or trade it in.
I'll sign off but.....the other side of it......sh#t happens.
I 'thrash' the heavily modded turbo(Mezger) on the track 6-8 weekends a yr......nothing.
My wife driving her C4cab (that got **** attention and was Parade concoured, but M96) into our subdivision at 20mph.....and clink-clink-clink......engine all done.
If you can cover your ****, just for high ticket failure (engine/transmission) at a reasonable price.....ie not service coverage, just **** coverage.....personally I think it may make sence.....maybe not.
