I've noticed that our 911 gets fairly frequent waves from motorcycles, but people in other types of sports car wait to wave back rather than initiating the exchange. That sounds like an awareness of the price difference from the other direction. Rather than waves, we do get a thumbs-up frequently, and those include people in mundane cars and even pedestrians.

I suspect all these are cultural differences that have a lot to do with the area.

there is definitely a very strong separation among owners of any expensive items for those who get those items as a status symbol and some, usually in total minority, who buys an overly expensive stuff for its practical qualities.

like when you go on a track you see plenty of guys in pretty expensive gt3/ gt3 rs cars - and you see most of them think as you are and more than OK to deal with.

then you go to newport ri on a weekend and see an unprecedented number of jerks showing off.

all people who are cars obsessed usually have no problem identifying each other - i can wave to a person in mini if I see it got modded suspension and drives well, same to people in nice vintage cars who always wave back and grin widely as they see you pay respect to their passion.

but i never wave to maseratis, ferraris, 5xx series mercs as those people usually rarely care about anything in this world but themselves. is it a bad stereotype? perhaps. especially as i had a bit of a side exposure to east coast all-around-nyc financial industries going to some mid-high level meetings and after-meeting meetings , it is an ultimate jerkland, way worse than some lawyers, not meant to offend some great guys from law community we have here but you cannot dodge those stereotypes.
it`s just inevitable - people are different and do have different reasons, so, to expect a 'brotherhood' in general based just on specific car type is perhaps a bit naive.

I don't know about this brotherhood thing but I've gotten a "take your dad's car home" from some little punk. Oh well, the price you have to pay for looking young.

I find the same thing when I am in my Jeep the older Jeeps seem to wave much more than the newer Jeeps. Also when I had my Vette I would say about 50% will wave back. I try to always give the wave.
