What the heck in this noise?

My 2007 997 C4S has been making this really wacked noise for at least 6 months. Basically, after I get off the brake, and back on the gas, I'll get this pretty loud creaking noise from what sounds like the rear.

It's highly intermittent. It might not do it for weeks, and then it might do it on every stop for an hour. I took it in to the dealer, but of course it didn't make the noise. I played them this video of the noise, but they couldn't really figure it out and didn't want to try that hard. I believe they applied some lube to the swaybar bushings hoping it would go away - which of course it didn't.

I had my camera phone ready a few weeks ago when the noise just went hog wild.

This is with the factory brakes, pads, and rotors. I am completely off the brake when the noise happens. It seems to be associated with when the weight shifts to the back end under acceleration from a stop. I'm thinking it's something in the suspension, but what?

Thanks for any ideas.

It could be faulty engine mounts (DEMS: Porsche Dynamic Engine Mount System). Check out this website for an explanation of how they work:

is your car an auto or a tip? On my 6 speed, Every once in a while I get the same noise when letting the clutch out, right at the point where the clutch is almost fully engaged with the flywheel. It only seems to happen under some load, like harder accelleration, or on a hill. Also happens every once in a while in reverse. It also only happens once the engine is at full operating temp.

My dealer could not reproduce it. I'd love to hear a result if you get one.

Well it might have to do with the fact that your car is rebelling due to you driving it in the winter!

I have listened to that sound alot in your video and I would check/tighten the mounts that hold your exhaust to the car, also IF they do not look loose, put a wrench on it just to be sure.......check the mount in the back middle in between the cats and also the ones that hold the mufflers(each rear wheel well).Maybe they have come loose and allow that tiny bit of movement under the right conditions!

My car is a 6speed. Now that you mention it, the noise happens right about when the clutch is fully engaging. Involving the clutch would help explain why the noise happens before the car actually starts moving.

Indeed! I have Pirelli Sottozero IIs on the car and it really performs well. I think people are really surprised when their commute-mobiles can't make it up a hill but the 911 just chugs straight through.

Good points. I like these suggestions, if for no other reason that I can do them myself easily enough.

Very annoying noise but if I've heard correctly, it's like a "chirping" noise?

If so, I had it too. Dealer said it was hot spots on the clutch. 2 months later my clutch went bang. Since I had the clutch replaced, never heard it again.

Davehutchinson, did your flywheel need to be replaced, or just the clutch pressure plate and friction plate?

someone else posted a video about six months ago of what seems like the same thing. A Dull chirp when accelerating from a stop in a manual.

I have a very similar noise and it also sounds like the clutch to me. I noticed on pre-purchase test driving of our 997.2S with 11,000 miles on it, and insisted the service manager take note of it as a potential warranty issue. It happened nearly every time I engaged second gear for at least a couple of weeks. The noise became much less frequent as I drove the car, until now it almost never happens.

My own guess is a glazed area on the clutch. This is a common problem with brakes when they're not engaged firmly enough. I've never had it happen to me, but I suspect letting the clutch slip too much can create a glazed area on the clutch plates as well. And it could well be that it creates an audible graunch only when the areas line up on adjacent plates.

For several technical reasons, that is consistent with the intermittent behavior we both see; and also with the noise going away for long periods if you don't normally drive in a way that creates more glaze. That is, clutch wear will tend to make the glazed areas grow smaller if we do nothing to make the problem worse.

I can't vouch for any of this of course because I haven't been annoyed enough to order them to pull the clutch and then argue whether it's a warranty issue after the parts are spread out on a workbench. This is just an educated guess.

Nice find! That is exactly the same sound. I wonder if the OP on that thread ever resolved it.

I posted above what the resolution and problem is. The noise you're hearing are hot or glazed spots on the clutch. Only way you will get rid of it is by replacing the clutch plates.
