odd tire mix - PS2 and V12
odd tire mix - PS2 and V12
after reading https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-hankooks.html i realized some people (signature65, michael2364, tourbillon001) who have ps2's in front and Hankook v12's in the rear are getting some odd behavior from their Pcar.
I also recently got 2 new rear Hankook tires in the rear and kept the old PS2's in the front. Afterwards, i notice the rear seems 'loose' at high speed or a normal wide-turns (on ramp, off ramps, etc). One time, i even had the traction control light come on when i am on a two lane s-curve and i can feel the rearend 'squirming'.. btw there was an accord going the same speed (45 mph ?) thru the turn..
the front seems overly sensitive.
i am currently debating whether to change the front to Hankooks or the rears to PS2s to match.. or change all four to Pirellis i have on another set of rims..
hoping other members who had similar problems can shed some light on best solution.
thx in adv

How new are the tires? These tires are known to be a little slippery when new due to a type of compound on the rubber when new. If that's not the case, I'd just switch the fronts to matching V12's. I have a full set on my car and have never encountered any problems taking hard turns or at high speeds.
I think there would be general agreement that tire brands should never be mixed on a car. The rubber compounds are different, tread design different, etc. etc. They are engineered to work with one another, not fight amongst themselves.
Also, it is ill-advised to replace only one tire at a time on an axle (like when you get a flat) unless the other tire is virtually new. The difference in tire diameter between a worn tire and a new tire can create problems.
And, if you need to replace a set of rears due to wear, you should carefully measure how worn the fronts are (even if they still look okay) and make sure they conform to spec. This is especially true if you have an awd vehicle.
Now, if the car is only used to trundle around town, obviously disregarding this is much less of a potential issue than if one is an aggressive driver or wants to drive on the track. Then the best advice is pay the extra bucks and do it right. It is a Porsche after all - take care of it!
Hope that helps. Best,

I have the hankook
fronts coming in and they will be on my car within the next few days. I can tell you that my car is dangerously unstable with the tires mismatched. In hind sight it was silly to mix and match them as the hankooks are so cheap. I hope they perform well, but if there is any loss of grip at all I'll eat them up quickly go back to the PS2's or what ever their equivalent is. I like to drive my car hard, really hard so I don't want comprise performance to save a few bucks.

thx for ur feedback on v12s.. guess the cheapest way is to get 2 v12 fronts..

i realize car&driver test did put those V12 on a second place after dunlop star specs but imho it is a complete bull.
imho only tires wrth to look at are 'standard' old and new PS2, pirelli pzeros, star specs dunlop, potenza RE11 and may be nitto NT05.

I agree with the above; don't expect 'high performance' from the Hankooks. Fine tires for daily driving and surely at a great price point, however they aren't going to compare to the performance of the Michelins/Bridgestones/Pirellis. Always a compromise of course so it just depends on your priorities.
I replaced my worn out PS2's on my Modena with the V12's and noticed the decreased grip straight away. Ride comfort/noise was admittedly better but that's not usually a first priority for a sports car.
That said, if you knowingly buy the V12's with these notions in mind I think you'll be more than content.

When I approached the dealer with this, I was told that tires that do not carry the N1 rating have a looser feel. Apparently Porsche has specifics for sidewall stiffness hence the N1 rating. The dealer also said that the mismatch between the front and rear are contributing factors as well. Personally I have added a few PSI in the rear tires and it seems to be a non issue at this point. My car is also aligned as aggressive as you can go on stock parts. I like the little loose feeling in the rear to begin with so it fits my driving style. I would say add a few PSI and see if you like the way it feels.
thank u, Utkinpol, Away, and Michael2364 for the heads up !
i m beginning to agree with u guys regarding V12 limitations.
i m going to wait for tourbilion001's assesment once he has v12s all around.. but at this time, i am leaning towards replacing the rear Hankooks with PS2's.

Great advice in this thread. After a short deliberation, I went with new rear PS2s last week (13700 miles on the odometer). $1080 for both including tax and installation. I like to drive my C2S hard on occasion as well and I figure she deserves to wear the best shoes.
update:
replaced the rear hankooks with PS2's... what a world of difference !
tried Pirellis previously also.. longer tread life, i m sure, but doesn't feel as conneted as the PS2s..
Michelin FTW.
- now i have two slightly used ( < than 500 miles - still looks new ) hankook v12 for sale -
305/30/19
$100 each plus shipping
pm me if interested

any one mixing different tire brands and models on a car of this caliber is just not thinking straight. even if you don't push the car hard, you may end up in an accident when roads are wet and tires slip due to different tread and ride characteristics.
on a 911, this is particularly dangerous even if you have PSM.
don't do it guys. a few hundred bucks may cost you a lot more in the long run. just get a set of rears and then replace all 4.
s04 is out. it's a real bargain compared to PS2 and PSS. check it out!
