What is an "Overrev"?

Hey folks,

Sorry to sound ignorant, but what the heck is an "overrev"? I've been reading about DME's, Overrevs, etc. in the forum.

I've shifted at times, past the 4500-5000 rpm range to get to the next higher gear, but have never approached readline, or even close to redline. Is this an "overrev"??

Thanks!

Most, if not all, cars feature a limiter: a device put into place to prevent the engine from reaching an RPM that exceeds its designed parameters. An "overrev" is when that limiter is passed, typically from an act such as shifting down when you meant to shift up. Long story short: passing redline.

An "over-rev" is simply when the engine is taken beyond its recommended manufacturers limit or redline. There is a rev limiter that kicks in at the red line to prevent this but during aggressive shifting or a badly timed/mischosen downshift you can easily exceed the redline. These are recorded in the DME of the car and can work against you for warranty claims in the future since they can cause severe damage to engine and/or transmission depending on the severity of the over-rev.

You have nothing to worry about unless you miss a downshift and put it in the wrong gear accidentally i.e. 2nd instead of 4th when shifting down from 5th or 6th at high speeds.

You've never bounced off the limiter? At 4500 you are just getting to the good stuff. These engines like to wind up a bit and some studies have shown that it's better for them long term to have their legs stretched. As long as the oil is up to temp I'll take it up to about 6500 under acceleration.
