Newbie questions re: pre-owned 997
I search the older posts but could not find what I was looking for so I will ask here. I am a long time 911 fan since about 8yrs old. I just sold my 08 BMW535 and I was looking at 2006-2008 997s. I can't swing the $1300-$1400 per month on a new Carrera lease so I started looking at pre-owned. Now I found some nice 06-07 997 cars with 10-20k for mileage, the issue I am paranoid about is the RMS or IMS issues. Is this issue really that widespread? It's a bit scary to drop $60k on a 4-5 yr old car that is out of warranty with something like a real "lose your motor" problem out there. $65k was my cap, on my 911 attempt, if I can't pull it off this time perhaps it's better to go with a new M3 for 3 years then pick up a 2010 997 as I heard there have re-designed the motor and RMS/IMS is no longer an issue?
I would love to get into a 911 but perhaps should wait until I can afford something without the RMS/IMS issue?

I am assuming CPO cars are only available from dealers, if so I really shouldn't waste time looking at PP cars? I looked at a couple places for an extended warranty, just don't know if one exists for an 07 car that would give me an other 5 years of coverage? I only drive about 8k per year so length of the contract is more important that mileage for me. I just wish I could swing more budget $$ towards the car, I guess this is where the that saying "you can afford to buy it but can't afford to own it" comes from ; )

What about older 3.2 or 968S? My neighbor is the Sales Mgr at TruSpeed here in So CA. They really deal with the older aircooled cars. Would this be a better way to go or just stick with the 997s.

You can get into a MY07-08 997 C2 with CPO for about $50k. The CPO will cover you to 6 yrs or 100k miles. Wait one more year and you can do the same for a MY09-10 after the 991 is released.

I can sense the confusion and maybe this will help.
1) The BMW lease programs are excellent and it's easy to understand the amazement at the Porsche lease .
2) 65K is a tough price point because it's less than an 09 997S and at the top end of the inflated 08 prices . Although i do see a few 09 cars in the low 70s at independent lots .. i prefer the idea of buying a CPO or private sale from a mature driver who took care of the car.
3) The other option is to buy in the CPO 50's and hope that an older car faces no issues . Most of these cars have been reliable but a full inspection as well as a dme scan is best .
4) A new BMW at 65K comes with a full warranty and free service . It's hard to beat that in terms of reliability and peace of mind . In my opinion the way to do it is with a new car . At 65K you are 20-30K away depending on base car or options .
The transition from a BMW lease (new car , free service , convenience) into a used Porsche purchase is a big step . My feeling is that if you feel any doubt .. don't buy the car . If not .. I wish you the best .

You have a lot of options at 65K. Just get one that is CPO it's usually two more years on a used vehicle then add the extended warranty for a piece of mind as others had suggested. IMS issues were mostly on earlier 05 cars (from what I've read). RMS is a potential issue on all non-DFI 911's. I've heard the fix for that is to drive it, you say you'll avg 8k a year so that will not be an issue, if it is, then it'll be covered under CPO. I had mine fixed earlier this month. No big deal.
It's tough to beat the BMW lease deals, the rates are so good, you can lease M3 vert for less than an M3 coupe or sedan.
There are several '09 CS CPOs listed in the low 70's, could probably get one for high 60's, so you are close. I'd hold out for a 997.2
Getting a well optioned 65k car means that someone else has paid $20-30k to break it in for you. Even with the significant changes to the '09's -- there seem to have been no significant problems with them.

I agree with Larry on this one. At your price point, lease a 2011 M3 hardtop vert for 3 years and when you have the means to get into the C2S of your choice, pull the trigger. 65K may be a tad too low to get into a 997.2 C2S with the DFI engine which is what you should be aiming for.
The toughest part is going from a new car every three years with free maintenance to a used car purchase commitment with potential problems --just to have a car that drives better . I am trying to view your questions taking into consideration what you are accustomed to .
There is one other option at 65K .
65K can buy one heck of a 2011 Cayman S.
It's new and has full waranty so that places aside all the reliability concerns. It has the Dfi engine . PDK is offered. It has all the technology .
In fact with 320 Hp and all the perks .. I wouid take a three year newer Cayman S over a used 08 997S.
