How to ship a bumper

I'm curious if anyone here has ever shipped a front bumper via UPS or FedEx.

I agreed to ship a front bumper for a fellow 6speeder and have run into a challenge. I obtained a bumper box from a BMW auto body repair place nearby, which is big enough for a 997 bumper (they are larger than you think!! The box would take a casket I think.). My problem is that FedEx and UPS have a maximum dimension for shipping, which is the sum of the 4 sides plus the length=165 inches or less.

With these bumpers, I can't quite make it even if I trim the box down to the minimum dimensions to take the bumper. THe box has to be 70" long, and 19"w x about 32" high. The 32" dimension is from the end of the wrap-around sides to the middle of the front protrusion.

What have others done to get one of these shipped?

I have shipped two. I shipped both via freight. Its expensive. Upwards of a couple hundred dollars. At this point you are taking up space in a freight truck etc... The first bumper I shipped I ended up losing money on because I had no idea how expensive it would be. I have heard of shipping via greyhound but I have no experience with that.

Thanks Jason. My "friend" has lots of money, so a couple of hundred dollars won't phase him at all. Do you agree Stacy?

i would call tell them what your shipping and best way to protect it..
good thing with freight its not moving down a convair belt ..so it won't get beat to hell.

i would call a couple freight companies for prices though..

prices can be all over the place.

if you go get a used pallet
and shrink wrap it to the pallet..this was the online quote ..(if you call sometimes you can get it reduced)

$150 to $200 sounds about right to me for just the bumper.

The Fed Ex cost would be $160 if I could meet the dimension limits.

Ship it via greyhound buslines, that's how I ship all my larger body part pieces. Plus it only costs like $40. Only downside is you need to pick it up from a Greyhound station. Never had any issues with damaging pieces, and that's even without using boxes. Hood(only thing in a box), side skirts, and bumpers. Use bubble wrap and there is a specific foam pad about a cm thick, looks like a blue tarp, and of course the handy duct tape to seal it all up.

If it fits in a Greyhound that would be the cheapest way. I've shipped a few roll bars with them and they by far were the cheapest. They also arrived without scratches and no additional bends.
