How bad is black?
Depends on your circumstances
It appears that if you have access to a hose and don't mind washing your car at least once a week, then black is a good color to have given it's "wow" factor.
If you spend most of your time in NYC, the lack of a driveway/hose and garage facility/valet parking will demolish your paint... I used to have a Dark Blue 993 that I eventually sold because it looked like a rat! The paint showed every mark and swirl... it had 20,000 miles on it but looked more like 120,000 miles.

I get a lot of satisfaction out of detailing my black 997. I have owned other color cars, and I never got that "ahhhhhh" feeling when I got done detailing them. Sure, all cars look good clean, but to me, black is always a couple notches up on the beauty scale.
I own a black P-car, daily driver and I live in the Northwest....I wouldn't buy any other color. I probably wash my car 2-3 times a week, but its is so worth it. Black is so tough looking...it is made for Porsches. I also use a California Duster when I get pollen and a light dust. I got the car with some light scratches and it needs a professional detail (I have been wanting to buy a Flex polisher, but......). I can say I have not made the scratches/swirls worse since I use the 2 bucket method.
DO IT! Get the Flex, but just understand that it is a bit of a slippery slope from here...
Makes it so easy to do detailing yourself and will only run you about $450 to have everything to detail any car that you own for many many years. A decent paint correction detail will run you at least $350-500 if they are any good so I considered it a long term investment when I bought mine. If I had it to do again I would pick up a flex with orange/white/black pads, Meguiars 105/205, Optimum No Rinse, and for a black car the most amazing wax is Blackfire Wet Fire over Ice.*Edit* Not my photos, but I was looking for them and wanted to post them up. This is why black is such an amazing color. This was done with the Blackfire wet fire over ice wax.

Jake -
This captures my situation perfectly. I have a Meteor Grey car now and although it's 3 years old, it still looks brand new...I also have a really good garage. However, dust is inevitable, so it looks like black is now for me at this time.

On my 997TT (black), I liked Flex + Menzerna SIP on a LC green, and PO85RD on a LC blue or white.
I cheaped out with Einszett 1Z Glanz, but since it is synthetic it definitely lasts.

Go for it... u will love it. There is somthing special about Black cars...people are attractted to it. I hv rcvd plenty more stares @ my black panni then other colours...so sexxyyy they say...hahaha
Basalt Black isn't really a black.... It's kinda almost black... no comparison with the jet black car...
A clean shiny black car is a joy to behold.... can you say Hallaula(sp) (can I spell halleluya (sp) NOPE!!
Actually, that Basalt Black looks pretty darn good......
I have never been a fan of balck for all the reasons mentioned here. However, the Ynot's photoshoot is starting to convince me otherwise....his black car is stunning. I don't think you can make any other color look this good. Of course, no question he has invested a bunch time and money for his mods but still, its probably one of my favorites. Hi all,
I love black on a 997 but I'm really worried about maintaining it. How easily does is show scratches and swirlies? How hard is it to keep looking clean? I rarely drive in bad weather and the car is garaged indoors, but as I drive so little, it will get dust covered.

or color blind silver.
Looks pretty 'black' to me. And as I said earlier, the silver flake makes it easier to look after.
