switch auto trans to manual?
Well.....I think it would be better to buy the car you want! The transmissions and ECU's in these cars are not cheap(never mind the pedals,linkages,etc.).If I had to guess, and this IS only a guess, you would go through $10,000-15,000 right away(but I truly am talking out my a$$).I would say you would be money ahead by NOT doing it!
There are lots of GREAT cars for sale at a GREAT price.......go and get the EXACT car you want!
Good-luck!
Cheers,
Stacy

+1. The days of swapping transmisions are long gone, with all the electronic, computer-controlled functions.
For example, an older copy of Excellence had a reader question about converting a 964 C4 to two-wheel drive. The quick answer was, "don't even think about it" and the longer answer involved a virtually complete tear down of the car.

Thanks! I was thinking that was the direction I needed to go. I love the car but have always liked manuals better!! but was talked into the automatic so everyone else in the house could drive it??? and of course no one wants to drive it, too low to the ground!
Life's too short to have such a righteous car that fails to make you happy.
+1 on everyone saying it'll be too expensive.
personally i don't see anything wrong with an automatic 997.. easier to drive in traffic

short answer: don't do it
long answer: don't doooooooo eeeeeeeeeeeeet maaaaaaaaaaaan!!!
:P
waste of cash, you'll have nothing but trouble down the road, and cars are notorious for having trouble without even bothering to look for it...
this is why I am against modding (engine) too. Most car tuners spend more time in the garage than enjoying their cars (at least the ones I know).

Might be less headache and expensive to trade it in for a manual. Hate to sound selfish but that's why I buy what I want, if you want to drive it, then learn how to drive manual. I don't mind people driving my cars at all.
I think the transition from auto to manual is called buying a another Porsche! It'll be simpler, less expensive and certainly easier (expect for the pocket book).
Play w/ the paddles if you want a little more activity during your drives.

That worked! got a 2011 GTS - 6 speed !!! That was a lot less work than trying to change the old one. However sure was hard to sleep last night really wanted to go out in the garage and play with it all night
great way to solve it...congrats!
