My 997 Doesn't Seem Punchy
Hello
I have a 997, just got it the other day. A regular 2006 Carrera, 32k miles
I love it.
But, the other day I came up with the theory that it needs to warm up -- like the oil temp, etc. to really be at its responsive, full performance. Is this true?
I've also come to the conclusion that porsches are not as punchy / torque-ey as BMWs in 1st gear, but really do their magic at higher RPMS in 2-3rd gear. Is this true? (I am a total newbie to this so maybe I dont know what I am talking about)
.......
And Today I was just driving it, (and it was warmed up) and it seems to be idling low, like below 1000.. and when I push on the gas it seems to take a split second to respond. But it also seemed kinda touchy and weird while going up a few floors in my parking ramp
Could something be wrong w my new car? Or am I overanalyzing things?

Hmm. I had an M3 and my 997 4S jumps off the line in first gear much quicker than it did. The M3 may have had more top end speed (I'll never get a chance to find out - legally). I love the way the p-car pulls in all gears.
that because u r "S"

delayed throttle: probably normal. that's why guys buy sprint boosters.
my advice: if you find yourself dwellling on it, drive to another dealer and test drive another 997.1 and see how it compares.

As someone mentioned, make sure the oil is at operating temps before hitting it hard. This is the right thing to do for prolonged engine life. Not sure I know the exact temps at op temp but you'll notice the oil gauge won't register for some time until warmed up. My gut tells me it's at operating temp when the display will give you a measurement.
In the end if you're still unsure about the performance/driveability, I would take it to the dealer and or reputable shop for a check up. They should be able to tell you if everything checks out.

My M3 took off from a start like a scalded cat. It also felt faster on the road. Part of this is the gearing. The 911 is geared way taller.(75mph in second gear) It also has a smoother torque curve and a mellow sound.
My stopwatch has proven my S to be quite a bit faster than my M3 (E46). I don't really think it is 50BHP and 200LB lighter "Faster" than my M3, but surely fast enough for me!
Oh, and the 911 clutch is about as weak as they come, at least when launching hard from a stop. Be careful.........

To the Op --
A base 997 and even a 997S is not exactly a drag race car . It's not slow .. but it's purpose is more geared for twisty roads with a splash of daily driving capability . It's a great driver's car .
For a drag race .. need a modded turbo .
OP - You either need to get a Sport Mode software from SunCoast or you need to get your ECU flashed. You are epxeriencing delayed throttle response. I hate it and as soon as I feel it I realize I did not hit the 'Sport' button. Once I hit that button the life is good again.
Get the 'Sport' button!
P.S. The car should still pull much better than your 325...

Here's my opinion:
I ve driven an Infiniti g35x sedan for the past three years - automatic. It feels more punchy because the power delivery is just so raw and is a more free revving engine. I never got the TSB completed on it because i kinda liked the jumpy acceleration in first.
With the 911, it is plenty punchy for me, but sometimes to the subconscious mind, the G feels more punchy because the power delivery in the 911 is just so smooth.
If i go by the feel of it, the G feels more punchy. when i look at the speed in the 911 i realize how smooth and punchy this car is over any other car i have driven.

Yes, punch isn't everything. My Audi S6 V10 would literally jump out in the first gear, enough to hurt a passangers neck, but after that initial jump it was a dog... it was very disapointing.
All the 911s I've driven, some with more and some with less punch, all continue to pull through the gears, something that most cars can't do. I bet a 997 non S has no way near the punch that my V10 had, but once it gets rolling it will take over by the mid 2nd gear.

Smooth power delivery is fast, punchy delivery is too disruptive to the chassis. Depends on what you want, but if you want punchy then any variant of the recent crop of American muscle cars should do the trick.
