IMO You should try as hard as you can to move to the 997.2 and not the 997.1. The 997.1 is a fine car but if I was upgrading from a 996 I would go to the 997.2.
If you can't I suggest getting an S when it comes to buying used. The extra features are worth the premium.
I would stay away from the 05's.

Good choice, the 996 is getting dated, there is no problems with the 997.1, just avoid the 05's. There has been a couple of IMS issues lately with the 05's. 05-07 still has RMS issues but that is relatively cheap to fix. CPO is nice, less things to worry about. Good luck in your search.
You are on the right track with an C2S over base C2 997.1. I prefer the C4S because of the wider body and AWD, but that isn't critical. C2S would be minimum.

The 997 (.1 or .2) is so much more refined w/ respect to the 996 interior. I'd look for an 'S' w/ full leather. The extra horses & 'S' options are well worth it over a standard 997. Buying used w/ some warranty and CPO (if available) is the way to go. You'll take advantage of the depreciation and the discounted options (ie. leather).
I think we'll see a decay in used 997 prices once the 991 hits the streets.
Bottomline: Buy the latest model year w/ the must have options that fits your budget.

OP: You car looks great BTW, if it was me I would play around with some forced induction fun + suspension tuning since you've already put a bunch of custom work into it. That said, if you really need / want a new car, I would go for a base 997.2 over a 997.2 S.
Avoid the M96 engine code cars. I believe the late 05's had the upgraded IMS bearing that ran through 2008. Because of the IMS issues many equate the problem to all 2005 cars which is not true. You should be able to find a great deal on a late '05.
unless you get 997.2, the benefits are there but not enogh for me.
the 997.1 is already old. looks old, has old electronics (nav, BT,etc). 997.2 is much nicer and its properly up to date from engine to electronics.
if you are a purist like me, who doesn't need nav, BT and all the LED lights, stick with the 996. it's still a great car!
