I had this long, articulate post but decided to scrap it. Instead here is a shortened version.

Paraphrasing an American Philosopher (Mortimer J. Adler)... One cannot argue with matters of taste.

I think buying a 911 for the most part has to do with matters of taste. True, there are certain things that are undeniable like its faster than this or its better at handling than that (Im thinking mostly on a very clear cut basis... 911 vs prius).

In the end, most people end up saying "buy what makes you happy". That says to me that its mostly a matter of taste.

So, as with many others, buy what youre tastes dictate. Dont buy a car because he said its 0.5 seconds faster or she said it corners better. In the end, youll be driving it, and if you become adept enough at driving it and find that you really need that 0.5 seconds in speed or that ability to do a 90 degree turn into your driveway, you always have the option of trading in for something better.

As others have said, the objective performance (ie, times) of the two for drag racing or on the track is close enough to be essentially the same.

In terms of how the cars feel, I do notice a difference, especially in faster cornering, and I agree that it's a matter of preference. I prefer the RWD, but that may be partly because that's what I'm used to. AWD feels a bit weird to me, but maybe it would grow on me.

Last but not least, if one has to contend with a lot of snow in a 911, seems like going AWD is a no brainer.

 

Off the track if you want to use your C4S in the winter; get some extra wheels/winter tires and have a fun snowmobile. You just have to watch out for the other out-of control drivers and your ground clearance.

More challenging with the C2S; no need for the 4S if you live in the sunbelt areas.

 

It's true; Damon at the Tire Rack hooked me up with some 18s and winter Pirellis this past winter, and they made driving in the snow a blast. Of course, beyond a few inches of the white stuff and the car stays in the garage because its clearance is too low.

In the cold stuff and slushy rain, it drove amazingly well.

 

First off the auto journalists are like any mdedia outlet .. driven by profit . Whatever "truth" they claim to have is often supported by anecdotal evidence spun to suit their argument . If they love the c2S or C4s it does not matter . Heck they even loved the 09 GtR before all the transmission and launch control hoopla .

The AWD is a detriment .. So much sio that even a Turbo can not beat a Gt3 in cornering ability despite the Massive Hp advantage.

I'm sorry... I respect you a lot....you've shared a great deal with all of us on this board but, frankly, your complete lack of track experience puts you into the same category as every other bench racer.......read the magazines and form an opinion unsupported by real world experience. Freeway and canyon kamikazes don't cut it.

I don't mean to be harsh but you simply can't know what the real world means except through the eyes of someone else. For those of us who try to get to the edge, the latest YouTube or C&D isn't in play. Best and (sincerely) have a great weekend.

PS The C2S might be faster in a pure sense, but the C4S is a much easier car to drive fast!

 

I'm not sure if anything you've said here addesses the actual topic of whether a C2S can drive the same as a C4S . All I see is an a backhanded ad hominem deflection which in my opinion reveals a weak argument .

Whose to say that the only test to determine a cars handling applies to the track or drivers whom you deem worthy ? Whose placed you in charge of what "cut's it" and what doesn't ? And where does having owned 9 of these cars fail any criteria of real world application ?

In conclusion .. you didn't address gthe topic .
That reveals more about you than anything you stated in this post above.

If what really bothred you is that yoir Turbo would lose to a gt3 .. you can dismiss it as one youtube clip if floats your boat . (BTW . others quoted car and Driver and top gear .. Not me ).

But putting me down to somehow edify your views only defeats anything you have to say . But heck .. all the "experience" in the world doesn't guarantee having some class.

 

No, on the track my turbo is faster than some GT3's and slower than others. It depends upon setup and driver skill. That's real world facts.

And when it comes to having "class", I'm not going there.....with you or anyone else. Sounds like a personal issue to me.

And FYI -- I am not the only forum member who doesn't track his car ..and it's my opinion that even an opinion of a first time Porsche driver on a test drive is worthy of hearing and deserves equal respect whether one agress or disagrees. In other words one doesn't even have to own the car to voice an opinion.

you have a great set up on your turbo....modded based on your track experience. (I'm sure if you wanted a gt3 you could have easily gone that route.

All this stuff about handling and lap times and getting fast out of the turn is nice...but for most of us and the driving talents we possess its just talk.

Any any 996 or newer 911 carrera is pretty easy to drive fast on the street and put a smile on your face.

To the Porsche potential owner...get what you like when YOU drive it...

cab or coupe, PDK or 6 speed, base or S, 2 or 4.

And once in your hands go have some fun.

 

I've had a 997.1 C2 for the last three months. It is the most fun I've had in a car in years, and I don't see myself tiring of it anytime soon. In short, you'll be happy with either vehicle.
