2012 Porsche 911: This is it
1. They need to add some more RSR spyder or Carrera GT into those lights; maybe for the 992 in 8 years
2. They need to widen the car so it has some road presence...making it long is cool, but for curb appeal you need width
3. They need to add the RSR spyder's aggressive hood flares...even the Panamera has it.
NB. I know 99% of the classic lovers appreciate the bug eyed look. IMO then, Porsche should keep the 911 an old bug eyed car, keep it small...but give us a 911- like mid-engine car that is broad, low, with curb side appeal.
+1 Lakeshow, that picture is hot
This is all I ask.
Porsche can then keep the 911 as a small, agile, old-school classy/classic looking thing.
I just want something that looks fresh, younger...eventually all roads lead to either a 911 or a Ferrari, that I know. Doesn't mean one has to start there.
Honestly though, the new 991, step in the RIGHT direction, finally!
My theory: VW group told Porsche the following: "Its the 21st century, not the 1800's...your SUV looks like an ugly whale, your sports car a bug eyed frog....get on it !!!"
Result:
1. Panamera's front end is absolutely money...the rear fender flares are aston martin...the car is
a. broad
b. low
c. long
Plus the new Cayenne is gorgeous. All based on the RSR Spyder and a bit of the CGT...so its not like Porsche ditched old styling.
Everything you need for curb appeal and style. Plus she drives like no other.
2. 991 - Not quite there yet but
a. longer --
b. wider I believe? But not by much
c. fixing those headlights with longer elliptical ones for curb appeal and style
Problem: Car won't be as agile as before and won't drive like a traditional 991. Thats why Porsche should make two cars; one that looks good and drives 8/10ths of the 911...and then the 911 that looks bland, but drives like nothing else.
There is something to be said for a balanced car; the perfect car drives well, looks great, and sounds great...and is somewhat reliable and affordable. 911 is the closest car to this. The car that fits this bill sans the price is the 458 Italia. Porsche should make a car as good looking (broad, mid engine, cool) as the 458 Italia but sell it in the 130 K range.
Either way, the 991 is a step in the right direction -- finally!
Only issue is that for it to compete with the 458 Italia...it will need to be priced at 200 K max...few will opt for a Porsche over a 458 Italia. My understanding though is that it will be more than that.
Couple points:
- If someone wants a smaller nimbler car, we still have the Boxster and Cayman, so that's an argument for letting the 991 grow a little.
- I thought the 991 will be meaningfully wider than the 997 (?), which would be a plus for handling.
Really, I think we need to wait until some proper test drive results are available. If the performance is equal to or better than the 997, the differences in appearance would be a minor issue, IMO.
I'm optimistic about the prospects for the 991, though that makes me a little ambivalent, since I just got a new 997.

the 991 gets a significantly wider track (2,5") and wheelbase (almost 4"!) and it is 0.5" lower. And for the first time PDCC will be an option as well.
Put all that together and u`ll get a totally different animal as far as handling and balance is concerned!

yeah.. the 991 looks awesome in this pic !
i like the stance and the squarish rear end.. i even like the aggressive front.
guess the only part i don't like is the direct view from the rear.. something just doesn't look right..
i think that's why Porsche put a big 'porsche' emblem above the carrera script.. to fill up the empty space between the rear lights

This is such a great half-step forward!
At least Porsche stepped forward.
Great for aesthetics...probably a little worse for those who like hard-core small, toss able little bug cars. Suits me well though.
Hopefully the next generation will continue the tradition of wider and more aggressive/modern front end. It does not need to get longer, though that has helped the roofline.

New info from my dealer - apparently the options guide is out but only for their eyes only
.
Badge delete options available all over - just like the Cayenne. There will be 3 options for the roof 1) metal, 2) no roof, and 3) glass...
Cheers guys!

With the new pictures out I am growing to like it a bit. One of my only knocks on the 997 is that I don't think the front is aggressive enough and that's why I personally love the GT3/Aerokit front so much.
This stock front end looks much more aggressive in my opinion. I don't think I can pull one of these off just yet thank sto my budget but I think it will help me get into a 997 in the next 6 months for a good price.

Eh, rear of the 997.2 > 991. Front, we'll see in person. Side profile, no big improvement really. Interior, yeah it's nice, but a 997.2 with the right options and color combo...really not a massive step up.
Those of you with really sweetly-ordered 997.2's, I don't think u need to take a bath just yet for your trade-ins
