you are probably driving it too easy and that's why the rears are not wearing faster.
+1, my thought exactly. Take the money and run! They are giving you two new rears at 1/2 price - you'd be silly not to take that deal.

I had a nail in a rear tire and my Porsche dealer actually patched it for me. The car only had 700 miles on it, so there was no way I was going to replace more than 2 tires (I probably wouldn't have replace both rears either). $50 total...

Bring it to a good tire shop...no way you should med with replacing all 4.

The insurance covers the cost of the damaged tire. So I pay for only 1 rear tire.

If you personally feel better about not patching, then just get two rear tires.
Agree. Unless you plan on doing 150mph on your local roads (or track), a patch from a competent tire repair professional will be just fine. No need to replace.

While a good patch would probably suffice, a two-fer on the rears is pretty tempting. Like a previous response said, by the time they wear out, you'll probably be ready for front tires as well.

+1 a couple of times.

Any decent tire shop will do an interior patch ( not just a plug ) for $30-40; just make sure the guy doing it has experience with your wheel size. Once done you can drive it as fast as you want to - since you don't want to drive very fast anyway. Over the past several years I've had 3 rears patched and never a blowout or vibration that I could feel but was not over 145 with the patch jobs.

ps: what the hell kind of deal is $500 for ONE tire when you are getting a free replacement for the one with the tack in it?

Quick update. Tire has been patched and has functioned flawlessly with 1200 miles of street driving. Dealer is giving me a new tire as part of the wheel and tire insurance so I would only have to spend for the one additional rear when it is time to replace. Thanks for all the input guys.

I have always had to replace 2 sets of rears for 1 set of fronts on my 3 previous 911 (87, 93 & 97). They were different creatures compared to the 997, but I would replace the 2 rears and drive on.

Sounds like you worked it out to your satisfaction, which as long as your aware of the patch being in place and you continue to monitor the pressure, you made the correct choice.
