Tire replacement dilemma: What would you do ?
your tire is half worn. why not change the rears out? patching is fine for streets but why wouldn't you get new rears for $500? at 50% worn, you may have to replace the rears by year end which will cost you $900. do the math. it's cheaper to get a new set right?
you are probably driving it too easy and that's why the rears are not wearing faster.

I had a nail in a rear tire and my Porsche dealer actually patched it for me. The car only had 700 miles on it, so there was no way I was going to replace more than 2 tires (I probably wouldn't have replace both rears either). $50 total...
Bring it to a good tire shop...no way you should med with replacing all 4.

You can patch a Porsche tire safely, if you do not track the car. If the nail is too close to the sidewall or on the sidewall, a competent tire shop or technician will tell you the tire cannot be patched. Porsche has a no patching policy because they do not want the liability of someone tracking a Porsche on patched tires...
If you personally feel better about not patching, then just get two rear tires.

While a good patch would probably suffice, a two-fer on the rears is pretty tempting. Like a previous response said, by the time they wear out, you'll probably be ready for front tires as well.
Any decent tire shop will do an interior patch ( not just a plug ) for $30-40; just make sure the guy doing it has experience with your wheel size. Once done you can drive it as fast as you want to - since you don't want to drive very fast anyway. Over the past several years I've had 3 rears patched and never a blowout or vibration that I could feel but was not over 145 with the patch jobs.
ps: what the hell kind of deal is $500 for ONE tire when you are getting a free replacement for the one with the tack in it?

Quick update. Tire has been patched and has functioned flawlessly with 1200 miles of street driving. Dealer is giving me a new tire as part of the wheel and tire insurance so I would only have to spend for the one additional rear when it is time to replace. Thanks for all the input guys.

Patch it! What dealer double talk! Even if you drive like an animal, you get another 5k miles out of the rears, if they are really at half tread. I've patched many and NEVER had an issue. As said, if you are heading for sustained speeds over 100, I'd think twice, but not otherwise. And for Pete's sake, don't have any tire work done at a dealer!!!
I have always had to replace 2 sets of rears for 1 set of fronts on my 3 previous 911 (87, 93 & 97). They were different creatures compared to the 997, but I would replace the 2 rears and drive on.
