Why are cars so expensive in the UK?
A friend of mine in London wants to buy a Carrera S. Using the UK version of the Porsche Car Configurator I built an "S" with the EXACT same equipment I ordered on mine. Mine came to $87100 plus tax. The UK version came to 71,287 British Pounds (including VAT) which at current exchange rates comes to $136,037! I also noticed in the configurator that many of the items that come as standard equipment in the US are optional in the UK, even on the S version, i.e. sunroof, cruise control, etc. The difference can't be just the VAT, there must be more to it than that. Anyone know? He's actually thinking about buying a car here and shipping it over because it doesn't matter to him whether it's left or right hand drive. The Brits are getting screwed I think.
Cars are like that everywhere...
I beleive Hong Kong is a 100% tax on cars. so say you buy a 100,000 dollar mercedes... it will cost you 200,000 there.
Just the way things are and the was exchange rates go etc.

I just spent 5 days in London, and couldn't believe how expensive it was. You look at prices and they seem about right....until you realize they're in British pounds, and the pound is worth $1.89 US!
cuz they ripped off INDIA til 1947 and now they are raping their own people to afford their monarcy. LOL! sorry, i had to put my 2cents in there for whatever it's worth
Firstly we have an unusualy high exchange rate normally its like £1=$1.5,$1.6 so that makes an enormous difference, then you have right hand drive ..it does cost extra to tool up the production line for RHD,and finally you have the getting ripped off stage.
A few years ago I specced up a M5 which at the time was £70,000 uk list with no discounts,I went to germany and paid £50,000 for an identical car full UK spec.
Atthat period you could also buy a JAguar xkr which is a car made in britain...for £17000 less in europe.
Summary..we get well ripped off, what can we do ?

That New Zealand price is just freakin' nuts! I can't even imagine what a TT would go for over there. Damn!

Base price for a 997 S is 1 350 000 kr.
Thats about 216 280 USD.
The state takes 100% of the cost of the car as tax.
We just paid 74 500 USD for a 1991 964 Turbo.
So please dont whine about high prices, as it is not, compared to what we pay here.

Can you imagine the rioting that would happen in the US if the gov't tried to take 100% tax on your car purchase? Republican, Democrat, Libertarian...I don't care. They would all get a beating!!
I'm figuring out ways to move into New Hampshire to avoid Mass taking 6% of my car purchase!!

I will never whine again, about Porsche prices anyway. Hell, I just moved to Texas and found out they don't have state income tax, I miss California but damn I'll take the extra $30K a year I'm not paying in taxes for sure.
Btw, whats the price for a CGT in the us? Here a CGT/SLR costs about 680 000 USD. In Norway there are currently no CGTs and 3 SLRs I think.
Income tax here is 30-56%
Living in what is rated by the UN to be "the best country in the world to live in", certainly has its price
