I think he was referring to color wrapping it versus painting it. There are companies that will wrap your car with a heat shrunk plastic that looks just like paint. They can do all kinds of wild graphics with it too. If you look at any of the NASCAR cars, everything you see is wrapped, none of it is painted. That way you could test out several colors to see which one you liked the best before you decided on a permanent paint color.

yup
most matte black cars you see are actually color wrapped
it costs a lot less and takes less time

There was an article with plenty of pictures and details in Total 911 last year about a 996 Turbo that was wrapped with a chrome finish. I know, sounds kind of cheesy, but it actually looked kind of great. Probably a nightmare to keep clean, but worth checking out if you're interested:
