What would be a fair purchase price for this 2011 997 Carrera S?
pretty funny indeed. 'good salesmen' practices my a$$.

One miscue and I'm outta there!
UPDATE:
Given the fact that the car has already lost one year warranty on the lot and the car has 38 miles on the clock I made the dealer an offer on the car that included CPO ($2500, 6 yrs., 100K starting 11/30/10, day orig. warr. was started), inspection for CPO ($400), doc fees ($399) and Clear Bra on front hood and fenders for $82,500. I'll have to pay sales tax in my state of course and either pay to ship it or fly there and take delivery and drive it home (Atlanta to Ohio). That puts it in my garage somewhere between $88,000 - $89,000 depending on how I get the car to Ohio.
If they reject or counter, the search continues...
UPDATE #2:
The dealer rejected my offer, countered with $86,500 but will not include CPO ($2900), Doc Fees ($399) or Clear Bra ($???). Basically, they are around $90,000 without taxes. I'm going to pass on this one and keep looking.
Money is still in my pocket and the car is still on their lot.

So, in CA, the doc fees are something the DMV charges, and non negotiable... and the Doc Prep Fees are like $60-$75, which I pay for the finance company. Basically, I think your offer was completely silly, you're asking them to sell you the car for over $12k off invoice where there is little, if any, trunk money on them. No reason a dealer would take a $7-8k loss just to sell you the car.
$86500 is probably still a bit above what they'd actually sell you the car for. But, CPO is a fixed cost to them (that they can mark up) but $2500 means it's not marked up. If they could wave the inspection, and sell you the car for $85k + $2500 for CPO, I think that is a pretty good deal.
That said, this is a car that has had 768 miles of hard test drive use on it
Personally, if I thought I wasn't going to keep the car very long, I'd still do it, but if I wanted a car to keep until the warranty expired, I would definitely not buy it. sounds like you've come to the same conclusion. The other thing to check is to see about leasing, with that discount off MSRP, a lease might be pretty cheap on it. Then, you wouldn't need to worry about CPO, since you'd just turn it in at the end of the lease (or CPO it then)
I wonder if this car did not receive a factory to dealer cash incentive? I know at year end the factory will make some money available to dealers to sell out their existing inventory. In order to qualify, they will internally sell the car or punch it as you said. In CA the incentive would range between ~$10,000 to ~$20,000 for S - 4S depending on the MSRP (exclud GT's and TT's). If you can find that number it will give you a starting point from which to negotiate (don't forget to factor in the ~ 1 yr depreciation it has already received just sitting on the lot too). Good luck.
I want to clarify something about my offer.
I have no idea what the dealer had in the car or what he is willing to sell it for. I was offering what I felt I could spend on that car. I wasn't trying to steal it or expecting the dealer to take a loss.
The dealer doc fees ($399.99) is something they charge for processing every car. Under their FAQs section they describe it like this:
Are any other fees added?
We charge $399.99 for processing the order and transferring the title. The government also charges a $3 fee to fund what is known as the lemon law.
I actually had the dealer call me back and I thought we might meet in the middle somewhere but in the end I decided to hold tight until I find what I think I will ultimately be happy with.

Sounds like someone suggested there are actually 2 white cars, so maybe one has only 39 miles and the guy is not BSing you.
Edmunds shows about $9k in the base sticker of a 2012 S. They offered at $16k off sticker, so they must be real close to invoice. I've had CPO offered to me for $2500, so there is a little room there. But since they are blowing it out close to cost, naturally they have little interest to lose money by adding other things at a loss that can't be compensated by profit on the car. Sounds real close to the best deal you can get, but that's why I suggested this car was going to be a tough one from the get go. Invoice on a one year old car barely gets you covered for the one year's depreciation, that's why I never consider leftovers real bargains.

Hi OhioLefty, please don't take this the wrong way, the car your looking at has 740 miles on it, not 38 miles and is a Porsche Executive Car. Matter of fact, there are five Porsche 911's that are PEC's. I think that the price can be had for the car somewhere in the $84-85,000 range. The car is punched due to again the car coming from Porsche Corp Offices, which is not really a big deal, unless you can get them to have the car CPO'd. I have dealt with Ryan in the past and I will say his prices are right on the money and you are getting a great deal from them. Ryan is the big wig salesman for the SouthEast Region, and again look and see what i'm talking about. Also, I live in NJ and have bought 3 cars from that dealership and I must say, ZERO ISSUES!! Good Luck.

1) Salesman says the car has 38 miles .
2) They are far apart in price .

82,500 plus the CPO thrown in to an out of state buyer places them below cost . They don't even get to retain you in service and CPO the car if you trade it in (which a local buyer might opt to do).
On the other hand .. holding a 2011 punched car already places them below cost but no dealership will give away a car with decent options in a standard color .
Inventory shows two white cars .
"Money in your pocket and the car still on the lot" -- Is never a bad choice ..
Especially on a nearly 90K car with some doubts and inconsistencies ( and 740 miles) .
Good luck in the search .
Good point, I didn't consider that.
Never settle, do you know how many people are trying to get out of their 2010's-2011's wanting to buy the new 991's that are coming out, tons, they are just waiting to actually see the car, and that means tons of 997's will be up for sale. GL with whatever you decide, it is still not a bad deal, hey you never know the dealer may give u a call one morning and agree to a lot of your demands....

You only have a couple of months left this season to drive the car in the Midwest unless it will be a daily driver.
Prices will drop when 997 owners sell to buy the 991.
The new 991 will be out in Feb. I would wait to see if you like the 991.
Be a bit wary of deal agreements. The floor on the "best price" is invoice. The dealer will be hard pressed to sell the car at a loss, so invoice is the floor. BUT, invoice is also the floor on a brand new car, unpunched. Right now, you should be able to get a 2011 UNPUNCHED at $500 over invoice (not saying this is possible though, but it should be). Due to the compromised state of the car, I'm not sure it is possible to really get value out of the car and any benefit for the 1 year's lost warranty. IF the car is the color and equipment you want, I would offer invoice and ask them to show you the invoice - and realize you've left some on the table. Keep in mind you are also eating one year's depreciation on the car. After you roll off the lot, it is simply a low miles, last year's model car.
For about $90K I would wait for a few reasons.
