when the car does not have sport chrono option, i think that is that llittle button w/ the shocker on it in middle console? i am searching for my first 997 now after selling the 996tt, and there are many questions i have about the nuances/changes between 6's and 7's, and where might i find more info about options/systems in the 997's? thanks for help with these newbie Q's

What you need is to read the owners manual or the technical manual first so you have an idea about all the things a 997 can do depending on equipment. Then we can answer questions about how those capabilities are grouped as features on the options list. It does get complicated because it's a mix of decisions by engineers and the marketing people. We could collectively write a book about all the features of a 997 and how they differ from the 996. The flip side of that is that Porsche already did.

I'm pretty sure you can find the different manuals on the Porsche website, but if you have trouble send me a private message with your e-mail address and I'll send my own copies.
