900 mile road trip immediately after delivery?
I am about to take delivery of a new GTS. Do you guys think it would be ill-advised, from a break-in point of view, to turn around and drive it 900 miles on the interstate? The eternal break-in paranoia.
on the highway, u will most likely drive at same RPM for long period of time which is not great for break-in (if u believe in the break-in period at all
)i would take some off-interstate scenic route along the way.
here is a nice read:http://www.mattituck.com/articles/engbrkin.htm
BOL and congrats
As noted, run the car up and down through the gears on the road with an eye on the speed limit. After the first 100 or so miles I would gradually increase the revs (and the speeds) until you are approaching the rev limit in the lower gears by the time you reach 500 miles if not sooner. Allow the car to decelerate from higher rpm's by getting off throttle and letting engine compression slow it down. Worked great for me. Seats the rings nicely. Have fun.

I wouldn't worry about it. Here is a thread on what the guys at Sharkwerks did recently.

I drove mine from Cleveland to Denver (1,400 miles) starting with zero miles on the odometer. Just alternate between 5th and 6th (and occasionally 4th), and resist the natural instinct to loaf it in high gear the whole way. Averaged 26 mpg. Remember, backroads are fun too.
I bought my '06 from the Charlottesville, VA Porsche dealer that went out of business. I took her out of the showroom & drove ~900 miles to Florida and followed the break in instructions. I changed the oil & filter after 2000 miles. Since then I put 6,000 miles a year on the car & I don't add one drop of oil between the yearly oil change. One of the best road trips that I've had.
Great way to break in the car. Nothing more to add than what the others have already stated. Cruise control is your enemy. Just keep a quart of Mobil handy and check the oil mid-way through your drive.
In 1999 I drove my new 996 cab from Ohio to Minnesota. It was great. I varied the revs hit 160 on the Illinois turnpike.
Just traded the car in on new 997. It ran like a top for 12 years 50000. Burned about a quart every 4000 miles. Perfect. YMMV
