Which is better?
Yo! Targa 4S is pretty rare...even rarer with 6K miles.
While Tiptronic is not near PDK for efficiency and performance, a low mileage '08 Targa 4S is something to consider.
I had a choice between 08 Targa 4S w/4.5k miles vs similar mileage '09 C2S w/PDK, my wife and I chose Targa for its performance and uniqueness. We are more than happy with 'only' 355hp, sports chrono w/PASM, 19" wheels, and AWD for year around driving (see attached picture!). The driving experience so far is sublime, to say the least.
We have not see another Targa 4/4S in our area, regardless of the model year! I plan to upgrade the front/rear with LED's and maybe wheel spacers. With regards to electronics, every year Porsche improves. With that said, I'm happy with the 997.1 electronics including the factory PCM w/Navigation, Tooki Bluetooth and Bose!
But to each their own. Good luck with the hunt - you can't go wrong either way. They're both Porsches!

I was not specifically looking for a wide body, even though they look nicer. These were the ones that met my price and mileage specifications. That said, I am going to look for a 2009 C4 or a C4S (without a targa). I think the consensus here is, PDK over Triptronic or 2009 vs 2008.

I honestly prefer a manual vs either transmission so that isn't a factor I can speak to with any personal experience tho the PDK is certainly the system that has won out and will likely end up erasing even the availability of manuals at some point.
However, that said, a low mileage Targa with those wider hips is a beautiful car inside and out and will forever bring more second glances from Porschephiles as it either heads down the road or drives into a gathering of the faithful even in the earlier generation trim.
Clearly personal preference rules here, but comparative pictures of color and trim options also play into this. Also, IMHO, the IMS "issue" isn't worth playing a role in this decision-especially with an '08.
Good luck and remember that choosing your Porsche is the fun part.

They want 70k for the Targa which is silver ext and black interior. They want 64k for the 2009 C2S which is metallic racing green ext and beige interior.

Have you thought about manual?
Some questions to consider...
Imagine both cars on a daily basis - which one would better suit your needs?
Which one is in better condition - exterior, interior?
Does your wife/family have a preference?
How long do you plan to keep it?
Personally, I went with an auto for primarily 3 reasons:
* allows my wife to enjoy the car
* car will be my daily driver
* performance when I need it. In other words, it handles and perform just fine, even with auto
If I wanted a serious performer and possibly track car, I'd get a manual in a one of these... Elise/Exige, Boxster, GT3 or even a based C2
