911 world press choice for performance car.
According to a Seattle Times article (which I didn't run the source down on further):
VW compact named World Car of the Year
Automotive journalists from Asia, Europe and North America announced their picks for the top world cars — vehicles available on at least two continents from Jan. 1, 2011, to May 30, 2012 — at the New York auto show last week. The Volkswagen Up! city car (shown) was named 2012 World Car of the Year, beating out the BMW 3 Series and the Porsche 911. The 911 was named World Performance Car, while the Range Rover Evoque nabbed World Car Design of the Year and the Mercedes-Benz S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was named World Green Car.

The new 911 was up against serious competition in this year’s judging, which began with 19 cars before being whittled down to ten, and then three finalists. In the end, the panel of judges chose the Porsche 911 over the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 and the McLaren MP4-12C.
