Question about 3.8L X51 engine conversion.
Question about 3.8L X51 engine conversion.
I am dealing today on a 2006 Cayman S w/ a 3.8L 997S X51 engine. The conversion was professionally done in 2008. The car will be my daily driver and will also see DE track duty as well. A reservation I have is about oiling. Apparently the 3.4L gen. 1 M97 Cayman S engine tends to suffer oil starvation when pushed hard on the track. Owners are installing oil pans or extensions, Accusumps, etc. to keep them from blowing up. Seriously. Can anyone tell me if the 997S X51 is of similar design and suffers the same issues? I don't want to buy his wickedly fast car and then have it come apart on me.

I have the build sheets on the car and don't see an AOS, VOS, or any specific oiling mods. I gather from your question that, yes, this engine has the same issues? And I'm going to have to spend more money even after the owner already paid $48,000+?
Not yellow; why do you ask?

there was one for sale from another forum that was yellow... the engine had some trouble...
Major modifications expect you to pay major coin later on the road... I would get a regular Cayman S or a 997 S

I spoke to a fellow who was at Farnbacher Loles and was one of the builders of this car. and he said the X51 pacjage took care of the oiling issues, that he was not aware of any problems w/ these cars. Except he did say I'd need a power steering cooler - what can I get by w/? Will an underdrive pulley + LN Engineering inline cooler do it?
Thanks.
